My son just received his Pre 64 30-06 Fwt. back from Saint Arbor Customs. If you didn't know Mcmillan stopped making drop in stocks for several rifles, the a Pre 64 Mdl 70 being one. My son found this out 6 months after he put his order in. Mcmillan gave him the name of one of their former employees who could get blanks and CNC inlet and bed with pillars to your rifle. It arrived and it looks great. The barrel gap is straight and the inletting and fit is fantastic. I'm not sure on the time frame but around 6 to 8 months maybe. He doesn't paint and Mcmillan painted the stock. The fellows name is Doug. I don't know his last name. He said he's been doing this for a number of years. If you want a Mcmillan stock for one of the rifles no longer inletted by Mcmillan this fellow is a way to get it a nice stock The company is Saint Arbor Custom and the phone number is (623) 296-4017

Thanks for sharing. Did he order direct from him or get it from Mcmillan first and send it to him for the inletting?

Very nice. Looks great to me. Looks like the action sits in there properly and the rear of the trigger guard is inletted properly. Mcmillan used to really screw that up. Based on the 2 photo's, it looks like they fit the action well, unlike some I've seen on occasion. Saw one here recently that was not, but did not comment. Sometimes guys don't pay enough attention to detail.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Thanks for sharing. Did he order direct from him or get it from Mcmillan first and send it to him for the inletting? Doug had one Echols stock and a compact on hand. My son did not know what a Echols legend was and ask me what to do. I told him to call right now and reserve that stock.

The only thing he did I don't agree with is the location of the second sling stud. It is too far back.

The only thing he did I don't agree with is the location of the second sling stud. It is too far back. I also noticed that. Not a great location. Is there a reason he even had a second one installed? I know, I know for a bi-pod ,but you should be able to use a bipod on the one sling stud with no issues. Most good bipods have a sling attachment. To each their own though. Cool that you told your boy to reserve that stock in a hurry. You don't say how much this company charges to inlet and install the barreled action, but I am sure it is not cheap.

https://saintarborcustoms.com/about-us-1/I spoke to him this summer and thought his prices were very reasonable. He has most inlets programmed so he can do it far cheaper than if doing one offs. It was under $300 for an inlet iirc.

It was under $300 for an inlet iirc. Are the Mcmillan's that are not inletted less expensive? Seems like they would be. So, a guy pays for inletting, the stock, pillars and a bedding job. Again, probably not cheap. No numbers thrown out by the op..

Yes, flat tops used to be significantly less expensive. No idea now.

The amount my son paid probably wouldnt be a good guide. I think Doug got the stocks at a discount and passed some of it on to my son. So I don't think it would be a fair representative of market price.

I've gone to buying flattops and getting them inletted through my gunsmith. I kinda end up just a hair more finished than I would if I just got a fully finished stock.
