Came across a beautiful Remington 700 458wm on the auction site. These are not CRF correct? Which I would think you’d want a dangerous game rifle. Correct?

I've never been a Remington guy, but I would sure hunt with that.
Very nice rifle.

If my life depended on it I would have a push feed with centre line feed such as Mark V Weatherby in any of the 378 based calibres or HS Precision.

Well about time Mike.
John Woods has been missing you too.

I had one of those .458 WM M700 Safari rifles back in 1987.
Killed a cow moose with it on old Fort Rich.
Drawing permit for population control.
I think the General liked seeing bulls around the post.

I can see how a straight/in-line stack of something based on the .378 WbyMag case would be a reliable feeder coming out of the Mark V magazine feed lips.

Ron,

I had one in 375 and a mate of mine also had one. Both were bedded etc. and were very accurate. The seemed to me to be a long action version the R700 Varmint rifle at the time with open sights added. From memory they were very similar barrel contour to the Mark V 460 and about same muzzle diameter.

Controlled round feed is over glorified. How well the cartridge feeds is important. I have both CRF and push feed I’ve never ever had a problem with push feed in 60 years of shooting center fires with only a couple of issues with feeding - nothing to do with whether it was push or controlled feeding. The first problem I’ve had with extraction - a Mauser 98. The problem had nothing to do with the action and all to do with the high pressure load.

Controlled round feed rifles I currently own include Springfields, Mausers and Winchesters.

I have Tikka’s, Remingtons, and several others for push feed.

I’ve owned many others, I’m sure I can’t name them all but they included Rugers, and Winchesters all push feed.

The need for controlled feed is in the imagination of a person’s mind. Feeding and cartridge extraction is what’s important.

I prefer classic.

Had a 338 Win Mag in a Rem 700 action by a well known GS. No feeding problems but spotty extraction with normal loads. Sent it back to the builder who replaced the extractor.

Fired it a few more times but sold it when the problem returned. Maybe just a lemon but enough to provide me confirmation bias that DGR = CRF. Maybe just my imagination, but it makes me feel better. YMMV.

I have to agree with Bugger. I would have no issue with carrying my KS Mountain 375 H&H after any game, dangerous or not. Carried it in bear country a fair number of times. It feeds and extracts just fine.

Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.
