I've discussed the use of slings with him and we'll definitely work that in before next season...

You may do this already, but I can't over stress the value of small rifles for practicing field positions.

I started my kids very young on bb guns and .22s- from field positions. But we started with good fundamentals from day one. Thousands of bbs later, and more thousands of .22s. and the nine year old has no issue shooting off hand at the 6" gong at 100 yards. Or sitting down, or off his knee, or leaning off a tree.

The fundamentals are the same. He's only shooting a .350 legend (Ohio legal) so recoil is low, but he only weighs 65lbs himself.

Lots of kids get plenty of practice off a bench, but really don't know how to shoot still. Especially when you factor in hunting clothes, the weather, Buck fever, etc.

So make practice fun. Make it challenging. Make it constructive. Make it realistic. And they'll be great shooters down the road.

Congrats to your grandson on a great first buck!

Watching my two boys take deer the last few years has been special. And the 7 year old daughter is thinking it might be her turn this year. We'll see.

Thanks Jake - he's also been shooting BB guns and 22's for a few years from field positions but mostly off-hand and at closer ranges. Trying to get him shooting further out, we started him on the bench this year and then moved to shooting off his pack. Milk jugs full of water and clay pigeons to keep things fun.

He did fine off the bench but is shooting low off his pack. I think he's pulling the rifle down into the pack. He does well on the shooting sticks and also sitting. We'll definitely get out and shoot ground squirrels next year to get him better dialed in.

Round 2 - since grandpa filled A and B tags, he thought he should get a B tag also.

Appears he's getting his shooting sorted out. 219 yds, perfect high shoulder shot and dropped in its tracks. Had to coach a little on where to hold due to a stiff breeze and he nailed it.

Couldn't be more proud...

That’s what it’s all about. 👍

Please give your grandson a hearty high five for me. That’s a fine looking buck and a fine looking young man.
