I've heard the terms "long guns" and "long arms" used to describe rough numbers of an armory for at least 20 years. I’m sure the dope was triple boosted, had rubber gloves on while wearing two masks and a face shield while driving in his car alone too. 😂😂😂

If the police press statement did not contain specific details regarding the weapons...how are the newsies supposed to describe a handgun and the unknown gun that was longer than a handgun? The press doesn't know if it was a rifle, a carbine, a shotgun, a flintlock...so they used the term long gun. I am trying to figure out why this spins youse guys out. Check out a 4473 section C box 24...handgun...long gun...other.

Every time I buy a new gun that isn’t a handgun it’s always referred to as a long gun by every FFL that I’ve gone through/bought from when calling it in for a background check. Long gun is the catch all legal term for rifles and shotguns.

Don't know about other parts of the country, but "long guns" has been used around here (probably since 1968) forever to differentiate those which may be sold across state lines from handguns which may not. If you’re talking about sales between individuals without going through a dealer, better check that again. Got pretty testy here a while back when we were discussing that, but the law is clear. I am referring primarily to the signs posted on the counter at many sporting goods stores. "Long gun" is commonly used to refer to a shoulder fired weapon. Be it rifle or shotgun. Gotcha.

I always assumed 'long guns' was a terminology used to include any stocked rifle or shotgun of 16" or 18" barrel or longer, respectively.
