Years ago I had a smaller electric grinder and it was always a struggle, getting tangled with sinew and finally just gave up on it. I would like to get a better one, thinking 1.5 horsepower. What is the best way to go....meat-your-maker, cabelas, something else?

Roundoak has the best grinder. Maybe he will chime in with the name and model number.

1.5 horse will be a hell of a grinder.

A pard has a Cabelas model. Probably 1hp, does about 800# an hour and he has had it 11 or 12 years. No issues at all.

I have been looking at this one.

I am seeing some that have dual grind, not sure what that is, may need to study up on it.

I have a LEM. Not what I would call heavy use, 2 to 5 deer a year. It's still going strong after 15+ years.

I have the LEM big bite of 3/4 horse. I'll do 5-7 deer a year and stuff sausage. I bought the pedal to help run it while I'm stuffing this setup it's all I'll need.

My personal preference is to skip the home-processor retail big box store stuff and look for older used commercial equipment. You can find old Hobarts and similar brands on ebay or facebook marketplace and for the home guy they will last forever. Usually can be had for the same or less money.

Nor sure why they don't just make the foot pedal a standard item included in every box.

I wonder if my pards Cabelas branded grinder is actually a commercial brand grinder.

I am sure in the last 11-12sh years it has done 10+ deer a year, probably a dozen or more wild hogs each year. I know of several old cows we have ground and 3-4 domestic hogs that hang at nearly 300# each year.

That thing never has a hiccup.

Find a used restaurant equipment dealer and buy one. Hobart probably the best.

I have a cabelas carnivore. Forget hp rating at the moment

It has been flawless. Has done 6 deer this year and a hog(100lbs of meat). We put up a lot of deer every year compared to most. Never an issue. Not as fast as the even bigger models like commercial but works great for us.

We do not try to stuff bags or links with it. Too slow

Buy a stuffer for that. Trust me

Keep the knife sharp. YouTube is your friend for that

I have a LEM big bite 1 hp. No issues on 5-10 deer per year and about 50/60 lbs of grinding pork butt for sausage. Not sure how long I have owned it. Likely 7/8 years. All my products for processing are LEM. I bought them based on my good experience with the grinder.
I got a cousin with a Cabelas Grinder and he seems happy with it after a lot of use in 6 years. Meat your maker seems to be getting a lot of good reviews. Im not sure how long they have been selling them.

I just got the 1 hp dual grind from Meat Your Maker. We did four whitetail last week. Seems like good quality and functioned as advertised but is also a lot bigger than most will need. It’s difficult to keep it fed but I wanted one that could handle a beef once a year. The dual grind is a nice option for burger.

I've got a Cabelas 1 hp grinder that I've used since 2006? It was made by Weston, I've got the Weston Parts manual I've used to order the teflon auger bushing. I cube the deer meat up into 1-2" chunks before grinding, one man can't fill it fast enough to bog it down.
Son and Son in Law both have the 3/4 hp model from the same time period. Both do a great job

Thanks for the answers. I just ordered the cabela's 1hp with foot pedal, and a fancy chamber vaccum sealer. Fixing to make my own burger from here on out.

I've used an LEM 1/3 HP for years, and it has done a great job but can bog down a bit when I'm butchering moose and feeding meat as fast as I can. Recently, I decided to upgrade and I did some research on various brands and models. Of the consumer-grade brands (Cabelas Carnivore, Meatyourmaker, LEM, etc.), they're all made in China. I ended up going with what was on sale and got good reviews, so bought a Cabelas Carnivore 1 hp model. I would have purchased the Meatyourmaker 1.5 hp grinder, but they don't ship outside of the US.
