I have an early Model 28 with a pinned barrel. My late brother-in-law had one that was converted to 41 Magnum with a 4" barrel. He had his converted in the 70's if I remember correctly. I really liked that revolver. Would it be more work than unscrewing the barrel and replacing it. removing the cylinder and replacing it? That is no timing issues etc. Questions:
If it would be more work, such as timing, who would you recommend doing the work? Any recommendations on finding the barrel and the cylinder? Estimate on cost?
Thanks

I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Being old enough to have had responsibility of keeping 50 S&W revolvers operating correctly for a police department I would guess that if the cylinder you come up with actually times correctly would be a stroke of luck. I can't answer any of your other questions, but I believe you would be money ahead getting yourself a Model 57 in the barrel length you want, as both would be N frame revolvers.

Thanks for the info. I’ve been looking for a 57 for some time. The ones I’ve seen are priced beyond what I think seems right. I’ll keep looking and quit thinking about converting my 28. Thanks again.
I just looked on Guns International and found one or two that were interesting.

There are several shops Magna Port being 1 that will rechamber your cylinder and either replace or rebore the barrel.

Thanks Get a quality smith to swap barrels and line bore to.41. He’ll probably tighten up locking and make it really accurate. DF

It would be a gamble that it would work out well, and would probably ruin the value of the revolver even if it did. I wouldn't trust and unknown converted revolver to work properly if I could just buy a model 57 or 58.

Bowen used to do S&W conversions but I believe he stopped. I had a 586 that he converted to 41 special, I don’t think he would do 41 magnum. Ronnie
