Does anyone know of a company that applies this coating to retail customers? The few that apply it (that I have found) will only do business with gun manufacturers. I want to coat a Sako bolt and components. (Don't want to subject the small parts to the heat of nitriding). TIA.

Just my 2 cents. In this day and age of shipping challenges (ups/FedEx on gun parts) plus the fact it’s going to be small batch or multiple orders, then the hassle outweighs the profit if any of dealing with retail.

You may well be right.

Being pretty familiar with DLC coating with our race engine stuff, I'm not sure you'd be best served with it for your purpose.

DLC works best with carbide or upper end tools steels as the substrate material. By upper end tool steels, we're talking about harness of >60 Rc. With the 4140 used for bolts, most come in at around 40Rc.

Also, there are three distinct types of 'nitriding'...each has it's own pros and cons. The style of nitriding we do on some of our camshafts gives a very thin (.002-.003) layer of very hard material (mid 60's Rc), for example.

There are several deposition style coating for 4140 that will do what you're looking for, though. GWS Tool in Milwaukee, Wi. is a good one to talk with.

I have had quite a few parts carbo-ferritic nitrided ( 1000⁰salt bath)
I'm not convinced it's good for barrels but for everything else it's been wonderful.
