I've had a fun season so far. Lot of deer sightings but nothing I wanted to shoot until day 8 of firearms. Set up on the ground facing west with a west wind in my face. Overlooking a low spot where three trails converge. About 4:10 pm I catch movement to my left and it's a doe fast walking about 50 yards out. At first I thought it was the button buck that I'd been seeing running around all goofy for the past week. Anyway she goes on her merry way and disappears into the brush. A minute or two later I catch movement again from the same spot where the doe had appeared. Buck!

Instantly knew I was going to shoot him. He wasn't huge but he was "big enough". Shouldered the Tikka 7mm-08 and gave him a "meh". He stopped and I squeezed. Right when I pulled the trigger I felt myself pull a little to the left. At the shot he didn't mule kick or anything, just sprinted away, tail down. Had me kinda nervous that I had missed him, although, at that range it shoulda been a gimme.

After 20 minutes I got up and went over to the spot where he'd been standing and didn't see any sign of a hit. Walked over to where I last saw him and found a tiny spot of blood. A couple more steps, a little more blood. Followed the blood through waist high grass for another 100 yards or so and there he lay. Field dressed 197#. Not my biggest but a nice, respectable Indiana Buck.

Turns out I had pulled left (and up) some but managed to stay in the kill zone. He was on a mission and I knew I didn't have long so I rushed the shot.

Shot this doe a few days later. Have one more doe tag (archery) to fill before the end of the year.

Thanks. That's the landowner on the tractor. When he hears me shoot he fires up the tractor and heads out to to do my "dragging" for me. Can't beat it.

That's a good buck man!!!
After 911 my company pulled a month of guard duty in Oct 01 at a old Dupont Chem warfare manufacturing site in Newport Indiana.
Unca suga had 1900 metric tons of jellified VX agent stored and secured rather poorly on the site.
They was in the planning stages of building a plant to turn it basically into rock salt.

Big azz bucks all around the place.
Lotta holy schitt look at that T Rex buck moments.
Open hardwoods and cornfields all around.

Congrats on a good buck man.

Seems like most people overlook Indiana as a big buck state but there's a ton of stud bucks taken every year. Shhh, don't tell anybody.

Does it get any better than Indiana? Lotsa corn, hardwoods, water...

Only neg I can think of is that parts of it are kinda flat. But S Indiana is perfect!
