I've found a nice old 760 pump that has light rust on the receiver. It's not pitted and the blueing is good otherwise. I'm thinking about buying it and would like to know if the rust can be removed without harming the blue. Thanks, Tom.

Get some Brownell's Oxphoblue, heat the metal with boiling water and rub a papertowel with the bluing on it vigorously, over the rust. A few good buffings should make it shine like new. If the rust is deeper than you thought a little 0000 steel wool lightly applied and then blued over will fix it.

Just put some gun oil on very fine steelwool and buff. The surface rust will come off and the blue won't be touched.

My favorite method is to use the edge of a copper penny and Rem-Oil. This will remove less blueing than steel wool and you don't have to rub as much. Thanks... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

One of the best new products for removing any type of corrosion is Corrosion-X.
You can find it at corrosion-X.com.
It kills corrosion, has not removed any blue when I have used it and does smell bad.
Paper towl or brown paper sack is good for buffing.

Yeah that #2 lead pencil is what we used on M1 rifles in the military took rust off very well.
