I'm looking for some smaller sized lighter weight utility rope. I'd like to be able to keep 100' in my backpack and more in the truck. I'd like at least a 200-300 pound minimum rating. I don't know what's the best strength for diameter and weight. I typically buy a 3/8 or 1/2" poly.
It seems like I'm always running out of rope. Friends neighbors and inlaws need some on occasion so I don't always buy the more expensive stuff because it seems to disappear. I was just hooking up the sled to the 4 wheeler for the kids and realized it's time to buy more.
A few years back a friend showed up to help me with a bull elk I shot and had over 200 yards of rope on a big spool. Hook it up to the elk and drug it out with the truck after some redneck engineering. I remember thinking it's good to have plenty of rope.

When I need any rope for tree stand safety lines or utility rope I always go online to any of the tree cutters ( arborists ) websites. treestuff.com is my favorite

Poly rope similar to that Amazon brand rope is the most overall useful for me.

Anymore I use mule tape for about everything. The stuff won’t hardly rot, it’s super lite and dang strong I've got some of that in my hunting truck from when they pulled the power main to my house. It is pretty handy stuff. We once used it to pull a buck up a very steep canyon wall. The rope we had broke but that thin stuff held. It was too steep to walk up much less carry a big buck so we backed up to the edge with the truck and tied together everything we had from tow straps on down. A few ropes broke but not the wire pull tape. Bb

How's that stuff for holding a knot? Need to know special knots? Will it work with a bowline?

OP mentioned using it to pull out game and it works great for that application. I have pulled elk up to 800yds. Using a shackel in a reciever hitch on the pull truck you want to feed a loop through and use a couple half hitches on a bite so you don't cut your long Mule tape. The 2500lb tape will pull a single whole elk and 2 in snow but you need to be smart and work it through tough spots.

I keep a bunch of 5 or 6’ long pieces of mule tape with a loop knot tied permenatley in one end of it. They are great for cinching down stuff when hauling it. Easily unties with a pull of the loose end.

I concur. Tough and cheap. Some don't like it because it is flat...not round.

Or have my electrician brother send me some.

Menards has that 3/8 x 50 ft poly rope for around five bucks when it's on sale.

I am still using some of my old rescue rope, one is static kernmantle rope we used for water rescue (bowlines work , but figure eights are better) and I have some dynamic goldline braided rope. I also have a spool of paracord rated at 550lb tensile strength. Different applications for different ropes ( I do not buy cheap rope as I need it to keep me safe felling trees or getting in/out of a treestand.(I don't climb anymore, but you get the point). Get something good and you will be pulling elk out with it for many years!
