This would be my pick of a 3x9.

Don't think the Leupold 3x9 compact linked above would fit well on a Mauser due to the short tube length and the eyebox on the one I had was not user friendly at all.

Who posted a link of a "compact" scope? I don't see one posted in this thread..

A leupold 3-9 compact works fine on a Mauser...

How long is the "tube" on that 3-9x Compact?

I'm not sure John, I would have to measure it.

John,
The absolute maximum is 5.470"

That is a pic I saw here and saved before starting on the build im working on. I love the look

Thank you. I built it myself. Crazy thing is when I bought the blank it showed great contrast on both sides. When it was turned only one side had the great contrast.

Is that your rifle?

Yes. It's a 1909 Argentine Mauser action with a Douglas #1 barrel 1/8 twist in 240 Wby.

That's a beautiful rifle. I like it..

Well, I'm going to show my ignorance I guess. I'm thinking of staying within the Leupold brand, but other than the magnification multiplier what are the differences between the vx series?

Good grief, your hair will fall out, and an angel will lose it's wings with such rash decisions. Haven't you heard, you need to buy an offshore scope to keep up with the Joneses now. They are the only ones that hold zero!

Well, let me add this. I can get a new Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x42 for $720.
[Linked Image from marvel-b1-cdn.bc0a.com]

Or a Leupold VX-3HD 3.5-10x40 for $360
[Linked Image from marvel-b1-cdn.bc0a.com]

First question; is the VX-5 worth the extra cost over the VX-3?
Second question; if it is worth the cost, how does the VX-5 compare to the Swarovski Z3 3-9? It looks like the Swarovski is $700

The VX5HD is a more robust scope and made much better than the VX3. The VX3 is prone to failure, if you actually use it. Again, I'd just top that rifle off with the scope I posted the link of. And no that is not a "compact" scope.

The VX-5 is worth it,how ever it has 30MM tube it would look clunky on the rifle you are building.I think the optics are better than a Swaro Z3.I think the Leupold VX3 with a 1"tube would be a nice fit.The Swaro is a nice looking scope and would be a nice fit also.

For a lifetime of use the VX-5 is worth the extra cost.

I have had great luck over a few decades with VX-3s of different generations but time moves on and the VX-5 is the best buy going in rifle scopes.

For the Mauser I would go with the VX-3. The one inch tube is a much nicer fit with the overall lines of the rifle you are building.

Don't let the Leupold nay-sayers dissuade you from purchasing Leupold they are a better scope than you would believe from reading all of the stories on here.

VX-5HD has a WIDE DUPLEX so if that matters… ones I looked through have a larger more comfortable view to me.

Thanks, didn't realize it was 30mm. So is the Swarovski worth the price difference over the VX-3?

That is a hell of a price on a VX3 HD with CDS.They usually go for around $575.You can never go wrong buying a Swarovski. They have the best customer service going but I am not sure what their eye relief is on that model.Eye relief is critical for me as I shoot prone if I can and tend to crawl the stock and have many scars around my eye to prove it. grin

A good used Zeiss 3x9x36 Diavari MC with the 1" tube would be perfect on that Mauser, and is better than the VX-5 and the Z3 Swaro. I own the Swaro Z3 and Zeiss for compact scopes, the Zeiss is without a doubt the best of the two. If you are patient, you can get a nice used one for less than $500.

Between the Swaro Z3 and the VX5, the VX5 is the better value., and I am not Leopold guy at all.
