As a kid, back in the 50's and 60's, chokes were fixed. The only options were either a "Poly Choke" or a "Cutts Compensator".
The PolyChoke was not highly regarded though a simple twist changed the choke.
The Cutts required that chokes tubes be changed out, but it was more widely accepted.

I bought a Win M12 with a Cutts. My first inclination was to have it removed. After careful consideration, I just purchased a "Mod" and "Full" tube to go with the "IC" tube it came with.

I don't know about a "bolt" gun, but I have no problem with the "Cutts" choke system.
Choke tubes are not that expensive online and you can have a "multi purpose" shotgun. What's not to like?

Martin, I 've had several different shotguns with Cutts clones, poly chokes etc. But I am talking about a Cutts compensator on a 1903 Remington bolt action chambered for a 30-06 based wildcat. Basically a compensator with no chokes on a high speed centerfire round...mb

Sounds like an early attempt at a muzzle break. Bet it's ugly as sin.

I'm sure not three guys on this forum have ever heard of, much less seen, a Cutts on a rifle. However, such a thing exists, doesn't look anything like a Cutts for a shotgun. Not all rifle Cutts are installed on Thompson sub machine guns. I have a 30 caliber Cutts in the box and I'm just looking for a gun to install it on. There is no problem identifying it. It is marked Cutts Compensator right on the comp. You'll know it when you see it.

The big problem was that most of them were installed crooked by guys calling themselves gunsmiths!!!!!!!

I have one on a shotgun and have seen pictures of them on rifles but never seen a rifle with one in person.

A Thompson looks naked without one, a shotgun looks horrible with one, I've never even thought about one on a rifle. Anyone have a picture?

a cutts helps the follow up shot by keeping the muzzle down.
why would you need a fast 2nd shot with a bolt rifle? you have to take your eyes off the target to cycle it and the time it takes to re-acquire a sight picture makes the cutts worthless.
maybe on a semi auto...but a bolt?
ehhhh.....
