the perfect hunting cartridge? If the 7mm-08 is so great, why wouldn't the 284 be better?
Like most guys, I've killed deer with a bunch of different cartridges. Even had a few one shot kills with the .222, but conditions were perfect. Over time, I've landed on the 284 as having racked up the most deer and bear for my style of hunting. Many impressive shots at ranges from a few feet to a few hundred yards.
You can say the 284 is not ideal in a short action rifle with long bullets, for sure, but I've found the 145 grain Speer btsp to be extremely capable. It's gone lengthwise in a bear shot at a few feet, and made longer shots just perfect. Performance is always perfect. Overall, this cartridge and bullet is one impressive package. For the high BC crowd, are there better? Of course. Does that mean the 284 shooting a 145 won't bring a lunch and kick some ass?
I'd argue recoil is right at the upper end of what the average shooter can do well with, from any position at any time. When you jump to a 30/06, many find it harder to control and develop a flinch.
Keeping it short, I find it pretty likely that the 284 is the best hunting cartridge ever developed. I like the Speers performance so well I recently tried it in a 7mm Rem mag and liked it there too. Just a 284 Winchester a little further out, right?
Anyway, I vote for the 284 as the most useful and effective hunting round of all time.
Flame suit on. LOL

It is pretty hard to beat. 7mm cup and core bullets in the 2700-3000 fps range seem to drop deer pretty well. I won't be trading my 7x57 for one any time soon, but I sure would not pass up a good deal on one if I found it.
Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.

I'm having my smith build me one right now! Savage long action, stainless #1 contour lightweight barrel. Already have the brass, dies and lots of 4831sc. Few different bullets I'll be trying out. Actually wanted to build it off a Remington model 7 action but it runs into box mag length restrictions.

Any 7mm is good for me, but I'd choose the 280/280AI.

I have owned a R77 tanger with a 284 Win re barrel on it for a long time. I have also had a 6mmx284 and currently that gun is re barreled in 6.5x284.
The 284 case if way cool and in my book it could easily be best overall case/round----- -----Regardless of some of the complaints you may hear about it.
Mine shoots 120s, 140s, 150s, and 160s all to a very close to the same poi.
Just my 2 cents.
You don't see many of them being offered for sale.

I would tend to agree the 284 is a slightly better if you're talking just velocity and such and maximizing a short action. but 784 and chasing lands in a short action with long sleek bullets can become a problem. and that may be the downfall I personally can't answer that. a 6.5-284 is an awesome cartridge I can testify to that..

It works real well on deer and pigs. I have my eye on a rifle chambered in 6mm-284. If I buy it I’ll have a 284 barrel put on it

284 Win in a 3.0" OAL mag is a good thing, with modern longer bullets and fast barrel twist.
A 284 Win in a 2.8" OAL you are limited to short for length bullets I tried 3X,s gave up!

I've got everything for the 25-284 sitting here including brass, reamer and gauges, but feel like I'd only be losing dropping down to 25.

I love my ULA in 284 and won't leave my family. I am a 7mm nut and own a 7x57, a 7mm/08, 280 rem, 280 AI, yes I gravitate to the 284 more often. Will it do anything the others can't, nope. But it is a dandy of a cartridge and does just about everything well from short to longer shots. Having the 3 inch mag box makes the difference with the VLD's.
Enough already, just shoot it!

I've given the 284 numerous thoughts through the years, but I just keep coming back to a 7mm-08. I really don't need the little bit of extra velocity the .284 offers enough to deal with the potential issues building one.

Dale Dale, welcome to the 284 nuthouse! Everyone that doesn't shoot one will tell you why it doesn't work as you slay everything you put in front of it! LOL Let us know how it shoots.

Fireball Any cartridge you have experience and complete confidence in is the perfect hunting cartridge. Certainly nothing wrong with the .284 Win. Sounds like you have had great success with it. I have bags of 284 brass but I shoot 25 caliber 115 Ballistic Tips in mine. If you are thinking about doing a 25-284 don’t worry about having to step down it will impress you. Nothing wrong with having a 284 family.

How could it possibly be better than a 280 Same powder capacity and you don’t loose from seating bullets deep None the less it’s a great cartridge
