I was told by some Canadians that I worked with, that it was the day unwanted Christmas presents were re-boxed and returned.

I have lived in Canada for 51 years—I have never received a satisfactory answer to this question.

I've read that back in old England, it was Day for the servants.

Best day of the year to stay off the roads, stay home with a good book and a cup or glass of your favorite beverage. The zoo opens early.

It's the feast of St. Steven --as in the song Good king Wensaslas looked out on the feast of Steven.

My first Christmas living in Canada a co-worker explained Boxing Day to me. He said that Christmas Day was for family and Boxing Day was to visit and give gifts to friends. So kids often got boxes to open from friends of their family, and the day took the name of Boxing Day.

This is close but not exactly the same custom as explained in other posts, but it fit with what we observed in the community where we lived. In the 45 years or so we lived in Canada, we noticed that many friends we knew would stop by to visit on Boxing Day, sometimes bringing a treat or small present. That was in south Central British Columbia.

I’d stop by to visit, Dwayne, if it weren’t for the trip. Happy Boxing Day!

Okanagan;
Good afternoon to you my friend and brother, I hope you and your wonderful family had a great Christmas and are all well.

Nothing would make me happier on this Boxing Day than a visit with you folks. The driveway is freshly plowed, but still quite icy so if you don't have good snow tires, it'll be tricky getting back up. wink

Happy New Year to you all.

Dwayne

Boxing Day was established by and for women, it's the only day of the year they are entitled to ask for their husband's credit card without questioning or scrutiny lol
