Put this small Quadrafire in the living room a few weeks ago. I cannot believe the difference these new stoves have over the old ones. Extremely efficient. Been running a Quadafire the largest made back 27 + years ago also have one in the house up north....house has been 75 degrees except when we needed to open the door to let the dogs out the wind is just howling off the lake....

My sister and her husband have a big, old-fashioned stone fireplace wide enough and deep enough for some pretty big logs.
Makes a great fire. Makes you want to sit in front of it all night.
One reason is, it draws better than almost any fireplace I've seen in years.
So I went around the rest of the house and put my hand to exterior doors and windows.
Yeah, okay, that's where all the air is coming from.

All masonry. I built it by myself, took 10 weeks. I got the rocks out of Bear Creek.

Big and pretty, but not a great practical heat source. It's getting converted to a stove insert, maybe the one pictured, maybe something different. This actually heats, and cooks a lot of food to boot:

[quote=ButchA61]Everyone who has a fireplace knows... Light the fire, and within 30 minutes every single pet will be balled up near the hearth.
<snip> You got that right!
Decades ago my parents had a cat that would lie so close to a roaring fireplace that a person could hardly put a hand on her fur and keep it there, her outer fur was so hot!
That cat hated being petted and would shred any hand that tried, but when she was in front of the fire it was fine. It was like she was drugged...

Nice fire, nice pelts, and a very nice collection of Indian corn grinding stones. Happy New Year. L.W.
