I have a 99 in 300 Savage, load 130 Barnes for it. I haven’t shot a deer with it yet, but it kills pigs real quick.

150 cup and core over 4320 or 4064 seated to work in my 1949 99EG’s magazine. Apply to front half of critter and notch your tag. Nothing fancy or high tech but easy on bullets and hard on stuff. The 150 Hornady spire point may be the perfect bullet, I’ve certainly had good success with it. Of course I could say the same about the 150 Ballistic tip or Norma soft points too. The same loads and bullets work equally well out of my rebarreled M7.

My son killed his buck this year with a 99 takedown from the 1920s. He used Federal blue box 150 grain

My Uncle Harry (1922-2004) hunted with his 300 Savage for several decades starting right after WWII. Before that he carried a Winchester 94 30-30. Harry hunted primarily in north central Wyoming, the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. Many animals were downed with this accurate rifle including whitetail and mule deer, elk, bears, and antelope. None got away. His rifle was fitted with a receiver sight and Harry shot accurately with it until 1970 when he had a smith mount a Redfield 4X scope for him. This rifle would shoot a consistent 1.5 inch group at 100 yards with core-lokt ammo. Harry died and the rifle went to his son who hunts with it to this day. 300 Savage is a keeper! - Sherwood

My tracking rifle used to be a very old 99 in 300 Savage, 180gr RNs, shots weren't always perfect broadsides but it would reach the vitals from any direction. At the time it was perfect for northern MN Whitetails.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I have a 99 in 300 Savage that I inherited from my Uncle, he killed some nice bucks with it. So far I killed a few doe's, all were one shot DRT.

Have yet to see a legal buck while carrying it.

M99 has accounted itself very well on deer and hogs with165 gr Speers.

Recently tried the 150gr SSTs designed specifically for the 300 Savage. Very accurate but haven’t tried them on game yet

A cartridge ahead of it's time from 1920 and way better ballistics than the .303 that it replaced. I remember reading once that it got the highest velocity with the least amount of powder of any center-fire which probably doesn't hold true any longer. I've heard that handloaders have some issues with that shorter neck and probably the reason that Remington quit offering the great 180 grain round nose Core-Lokt in the .300 Savage. I went looking for a nice M99 in a .308 and was a bit disappointed when I found a really nice '57 99F, but it was in the .300 Savage instead. Not after I've shot it though. In fact lots of guys that load for their .308 throttle them down to a .300 Savage level. It works just as well on deer as a .308 with less recoil. The last deer that I shot with mine and one of my few remaining 180 Core-Lokts just fell over. Oh and that 99F with a 1.5-5x20 Leupold heavy Duplex comes up and points like my index finger. I wish I was younger to go tracking and stalking more with that rifle.

My other auto is a .45

People keep mentioning that, but I haven't run into any problems.

All my Sav 99s shoot Fed Blue Box 150s very well. Great performance on deer and hogs.

For handloads, I like 130 TTSXs and 150 Interlocks.

If I was building one, I'd get a reamer with a neck .100" longer (about .320" neck) then you'd have a better cartridge for most short actions. Easy to make out of .308 brass.

Why would that be better?
