I grew up reading mostly Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, Sports Afield, and Fur-Fish-Game.
Been more years than I can recall since I looked at any of the first three.
I still subscribe however, to Fur-Fish-Game.
IMO, the only one left thats worth a damn.
Also, I believe, only one still publishing with "Cover Art"
I think their motto "The Magazine for the Practical Outdoorsman" fits it perfectly.

I also took FF&G for a number of years. I always enjoyed it. Outdoor Life just wasn't the same after O'Connor left. F&S and SA were never as good as OL was. Anyway, that era of time is gone, and will sadly never return.

I would love to visit the O'Conner center in idaho.
Run by his son.
They have Jacks favorite rifle on display. I'm told that if the guy takes a liking to ya, he has been known to let an occasional visitor handle it.

Actually, Bradford O'Connor doesn't run the Jack O'Connor Hunting Heritage and Education Center.

Brad is a long-time retired newspaperman and lives in Washington State. But he does try to visit the Center in Lewiston every year, during their annual fundraiser, and yes, has been known to let people personally handle the guns. And there are a LOT more of Jack and Eleanor's guns there than Jack's favorite .270....

Double Gun Journal was worth the look too along with FFG and Sports Afield.

I also like Shooting Sportsman.

I always shoot metal magazines outdoors and will shoot plastic magazines at an indoor range.

Actually, not a one. Not my style.
I do enjoy watching the various Shuffle Dance videos.

I too have visited the O'Connor center, 2x about 5 years between visits. The times I was there and older man and his wife were looking after the place. The display case holding O'Connor rifles contained his wife's 7x57, Jack's 270win (I believe #2), his 375h&h mag, and I forget if there was a 4th or 5th rifle. I grew up reading O'Connor, once owned every book he authored, and made sure the first new big game rifle I purchased in 1972 was a 270win. Those were the good old days.

John Jobson from iirc, sports afield was also a big advocate of the .270, even though he was Camping editor.

Jobson also was a fan of the 7X57

Pennsylvania Game News is a pretty enjoyable magazine for folks who hunt there.
Only mag I have subscribed to in a long time.

Magazines in general and outdoor magazines in particular are a moribund species. If for no other reason that the fact that people won't pay to get stuff they think they can get online for free.

I stopped writing for gun magazines over a decade ago because they no longer accepted freelance work. They had barely enough page count to keep their staff writers working, one editor told me. The late and dearly lamented Ken Howell warned me years before that about the coming demise of shooting magazines. At the end, I was getting published in only two: Handloader and Varmint Hunter. Then without warning, VH went out of business and Handloader told me they had years worth of my articles on file - probably never to be used.

And they never were.
