They’re actually not that bad, and have a couple water holes to hunt. One being over 20 acres of water, the other being 3/4 of an acre, but across a fence from an 8 acre pond on the north and 127 acre lake on the east. Nobody ever hunts either place except for me during Christmas.
First day, everybody wanted to sleep in. 15 minute limit. 3 teal, 3 ringnecks. Missed the mallard when it came through.
Sun wasn’t even up when I picked up the last bird.
Next day brought my 12 year old. His first ever hunt for birds on the wing. Had 15+ from 4 different groups in our decoys before shooting light. Lots of birds flying. Lots of shooting AT birds. And a happy conclusion. 1 teal for the morning. Could have been an easy limit again for me, but gladly deferred my shooting to him.
This afternoon was a hunt on the 3/4 acre spot. Get there and it is covered in ringtails. Jump the dam, and get a bird each.
Nine year old sister wanted to pose with the ringer.
She also wanted to set decoys in the rain.
Had a few make some high passes before the downpour started. Got one more.
She’s pretty cute. And zero complaining about being cold and wet. Unlike her brother. She doesn’t realize 70 degree days aren’t often in the duck marsh back home in Missouri.
Trying to decide if I want to make the 8 hour drive back the middle of the month when they are out of school for a 3 day weekend before the season ends.
