If anyone picked Pope Benedict, they got it wrong. He died today, on New Year's Eve.
Very odd that he resigned. Not sure if any other Pope did that, or if it's even possible according to Catholic Tradition. I mentioned him as going to kick off, but not in my official top 3... just as a side note. He resigned because people found out he was a Nazi.

He resigned because people found out he was a Nazi. Every boy in Germany was required to be in the Hitler Youth. It was a public service requirement. I knew a man in Ft. Lauderdale who was in it. When he turned sixteen, the Russians, Brits, and the US were simultaneously advancing on Berlin. He was handed a soldier's uniform and a Mauser, and instructed to shoot any soldier not wearing a German uniform. The first thing he did, once finding himself alone, was drop his rifle and helmet, and search for either a British or US Soldier to surrender to. Rumor at that time was that you didn't want to surrender to a Soviet soldier. Since he was just a kid, he was treated well by the US authorities, and was quickly released. More mature surrendering German soldiers, under orders from Eisenhower, were treated quite poorly by the US. Hundreds of thousands of them died as a result of being penned up without food, water, or toilet facilities, in full exposure to the elements for weeks on end. His youth saved him from that fate.
