Because in union there is strength. A lot of those workers you mentioned are also union, nurses, firefighters, truck drivers (teamsters), etc. Unions where not suppressed do a lot of good for worker safety and benefits and a lot of other employers treat their men right the stave off unions. So everybody benefits.
We wouldn't have all these skilled U.S. citizens pushed out of the building trades by Mexicans if it wasn't for the union busting Taft-Hartley law.
