I'm talking the economy E and not the pre War E. I've never been able to get used to the buttstock not having those raised pads on the sides. They look odd to me

I think an E restocked to something nicer could make a respectible worikng rifle, given you got it at a good enough price to make it a reasonable project.

I picked up one in 308 at an auction for $300. Decided I needed money for another 99, sold it at my LGS for $350. After I sold it I saw E's that other people restocked with EG wood, and was sorry I sold it.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

They shoot okay. What gets me on most of the models is that "walnut like finish". Agree with restocking them can make a fine rifle.. and you can keep the original so you're not "ruining" anything. Course the premil receivers that make up the Style 1 and Style 2 99E's are the best. Walnut stocks, side panels, cartridge counters, tang sight screws..
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

I would be afraid to restock one. There's so much wood to metal area on a 99 stock I'd worry the fit would never be as good

only ones I still have is the 1960 transitional model and an E/S. I would probably sell the E/S if I knew what it's worth. It is kind of an interesting rifle though.

I rebarreled an E in 260 Rem and restocked it with prewar R. Now it has looks to match its accuracy.

I also have an E restocked in EG wood and love it. One of these day I'm going to stock one as a barrel band carbine.

Where can you buy replacement stocks for the Savage 99E. Mine was made in 1961 I think. Thanks

Since the 99E doesn't have a cartridge counter the left side of the receiver it is a great place for aftermarket engraving. The right side of all models is pretty good too.

I have no problem with how they look. I've just never happened across one for sale in a cartridge I was interested in. I saw one in 308 a year or so back, but I have no desire to own one in 308.
You just don't see many 99s around here in general, let alone on the rack in shops. I've only taken mine to a public range a handful of times, and pretty much every time I've had people ask me what they were because they'd never seen one before. 🤷♂️

You can really improve the looks of a 99E if you remove the factory stocks and hose clamp a 2x4 to it.

I kind of like the looks of the unpaneled buttstock.
I had a Monkey Wards Marlin for a bit that I am half convinced may have had stocks turned from 2x on it... that wood was yellow.

A lot of people must because I've had two that someone sanded the side panels off on. I have one now. A 99F in 300 from 1957. A beautiful gun but somebody sanded the side panels off the stock

I like the E for hunting, have them in a few calibers, my 60’s 308 with 20” inch barrel is perfect for walking through the thick tag alders, ive used one in 300 last couple yrs, with 180 gr ammo, works great!
