I just recently bought a remington 700 magpul in 260 rem with the 1:8 twist and 22 inch barrel. I read that some guys are having success with some slower powders like imr 7828 but I couldn't find any info on length of barrel they where using. I would think the shorter barrel might not have the same success but would like to hear some real world experience. Also if anyone has used imr 7977 load data would be appreciated.

I can't help you with performance from the shorter barrel but I do see on Hodgdon's reloading data center that they show data for both IMR 7977 and H 1000 in the 260rem with heavier bullets.

I did see that but everything shows 24 inch barrel I wonder if the shorter barrel is going to end up with a fire ball out the end of the barrel and wasted powder.

I loaded some cases with H4831 and 129 gr Hornady SSTs for an 16" barreled (18" counting muzzle break/flash hider) AR-10 and am now shooting them in a 22" barrel bolt gun. I didn't notice any significant muzzle flash through the scope with either but the noise was much more noticeable compared to factory loads when using the AR. The bolt gun seemed no different than any other 308 based cartridge I've used. I was shooting on a sunny day but was shooting down a rather large diameter concrete pipe.

Shooting on the range was not any different with the bolt gun. Ear muffs were plenty. With the AR I added foam plugs with the muffs to add a little more protection.

I did not run the rounds over a chronograph but shooting on the range has me guessing the trajectory out to 400 yards is on par with my 6mm Rem using factory Core-Lokts. That load is running a bit over 2900 fps with a 26" barrel.

It is unlikely the powder capacity of a 260 is going to be wasting powder with a 22” barrel and heavyish bullet.

Going from a 24" to 22" inch barrel isn't going to make that much difference. If you want faster speeds, try some RL16 or RL26. 26 will be faster. 16 will have a small gain over H4350.

Lastly, run your load through GRT to give you an idea.

I've stuffed 50.0 gr of H-1000 into a case using the 139 Scenar. It's rather compressed, but shot very well.

If the OP is contemplating 7828, the SSC (super short cut) version is recommended.

In my Savage model 16, 260 Rem. 22" bbl. 1/8 twist. Using the Badlands Original Bulldozer 125gr mono.Rel 26 & CCI 250 mag primer. 3029 fps. Have been shooing this load for two seasons now. Has proven successful on deer & elk.[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc] Recovered bullet after passing completely thru elk on an angled shot. Came to rest just under the hide after passing thru the right shoulder, Renaming weight , 105 grs. Range between 30 & 35 yds.

I have done the same. I was remembering that being over 50 gr but it's been a long time since I've done this and could be mistaken. I use some of that ammo in a high power silhouette match and got a few complaints of muzzle flash and excessive noise on the firing line from the guys next to me.... 😁

Been shooting the 260 Rem since it was launched back in 1998....

one rifle with a 26 inch barrel ( Rem 700 Varmint barrel)

2 with a 22 inch barrel with a 1 in 8 twist, ( Ruger 77 mk 2)

any of the powders mentioned in this thread will work just fine...

and don't look for a big velocity loss in a 22 inch barrel vs a 24 inch...

say that, having an aftermarket barrel on a Model 70, 1 in 8 twist, and 24 inch stainless...gives up a little less than 50 fps MV...
