I can remember some years ago I kind of think it was the manufacturer Otters but not sure that made an electric rod that you filled the barrel with a solvent and stuck the rod in it and plugged it in like overnight to help clean gun barrels. it seems like there was a couple different rods or solutions one for copper one for general fouling . not seen or heard of this such a thing and several years did these things just not work very good or?...

Outers sent me one to test years ago. It worked, but was a real PITA to set up, and pretty messy.

Would guess they disappeared because around then much more effective cleaning solvents appeared, that you could just swab into the bore and leave overnight, and eventually less than an hour, and they'd clean the bore well without any risk of pitting.

Yes they were a PITA to work, I had one rifle with a muzzle brake that was a real pain to clean with that.

Worked very well on bores that fouled bad. An old man down the road had an 1895 that's he couldn't get clean, it took 4 or 5 sessions but I finally got most of the copper out.

I never saw it as much of a pain and don't recall it being messy. Batteries leaked in the control unit so in the trash it went.

Plus one - and I still have mine - I bought a bunch of solution for it before it became hard to find.

Wasn't the idea that the solution worked with the electricity to plate the rod(s) with the metal fouling?

Yep, and it worked. But the longer I used mine, the more the rubber gasket that sealed the bore tended to leak--which is why I mentioned it being a little messy.

I read somewhere and don’t know if it’s true, that if the bore was pitted, the unit could make it worse…never saw it myself.

I had one but setting it up was a pain in the buttocks. I think I still have some of the fluid somewhere 😊

Used mine last week to get lead out of a 45 Colt that really leads up. I am looking for more of the “Lead Out” solution if anyone knows where to find it. Would be happy to hear from 10Gaugemag if you want to sell your lead out solution!

Best use, to me, was removing lead from a heavily leaded barrel. But in addition to the previously mentioned problems I had to remove the rod to mechanically remove lead from the rod before it would continue to efficiently remove lead from the barrel.

Which was decidedly inefficient.

Just for those of you with curious minds, the Outers CopOut Plus solution contain approximately 0.6 percent cupric acetate and 2.5 percent ammonium acetate (3.62 grams/ liter of copper acetate and 38.5 grams/liter of ammonium acetate) in distilled/deionized water. The LeadOut Plus contains approximately 2 percent lead acetate and 5 percent ammonium acetate (6.50 grams/liter of lead acetate and 38.5 grams/liter of ammonium acetate ) in distilled/deionized water. A good basic solution for either would be

Copper Solution
562.3 grains Ammonium Acetate
51.3 grains Copper Acetate or 58.3 grains Cupric Acetate Monohydrate
Add distilled (or high megohm deionized) water to make 1 Qt.

Lead Solution
562.3 grains Ammonium Acetate
95.0 grains Lead Acetate or 110.8 grains of Lead Acetate Trihydrate
Add distilled (or high megohm deionized) water to make 1 Qt.

Note that since the Outers FoulOut unit limits the voltage and current in the electrolysis process and runs at about .3 volts (3/10 volt)-- at typically a max of about 20 milliamps.

The Outers Foul Out is the tool that taught me that barrels don't need to be spotlessly clean to shoot well. In fact, quite the opposite.

I did use it to get the copper out of a 244 Remington that had never been cleaned with anything more than 3-In-1 oil....that was pre-bore scope days. It went from key holing bullets @ 25 yards to a nice shooting rifle.

I have one and still use it. I bought a big Jug of the Lead out. Works great on handguns. Rubber stoppers for the chamber can still purchased that does.
the same job. Powder coating kind of made it not necessary though.

There has been several postings in the past when the Cop Out became hard to find, but I found the chemicals were hard to find
