I don't own any revolvers but I see "dash" versions on Smith and Wessons. It seems to have an effect on the value. I guess the dash is upgraded or next generation type designators. I haven't seen any detailed pictures but was wondering if the gun is marked somewhere obvious that say a gun is a 686-1 or 66-2 or whatever.
Thanks

Inside the crane opening on the frame. Open the cylinder and it’s right below the barrel shank.

You are correct that the dash number denotes certain engineering changes over earlier models. These are pretty much unique to each model number and have no bearing on other model numbers. Roy Jinks wrote a great reference book on Smith and Wesson revolvers. I’d highly recommend it if you have even the slightest interest in them.
The difference in prices are largely due to the scarcity of certain configurations. If you were putting together a comprehensive collection of say model 19s, you’d find the -1s harder to come by than the -2s or -3s. Barrel lengths, finishes, sights, grips, etc. also come into play when determining a value for a particular S&W revolver. As with other collector firearms, condition is very important.

Once you learn the Smith and Wesson marking system, I’d suggest a study into Case pocket knives. This should keep you busy for years!
