I have questions about what is allowed in ATV’s for Caribou hunting up on the Steece or up at Chicken. I would prefer a SXS but I understand the trails are limited to 48” machines. Have I been told wrong? What models are actually used on the trails? Please give me some direction.

What do you see people using. Am I going to be limited to a traditional ATV?

Facebook has a 40 Mile Caribou page. Check with those guys. I hunt the 40 Mile Country but not the Steese area.

Last August was first trip up steese for the ‘bou circus. There was just about every imaginable machine and every imaginable hauling method on display.

Last 4 years hunting the Steese, here.

The SXS tend to have higher axels/wheels (ground clearance) and dig the ruts deeper than the ATVs (what I have), which then are "forced" to make new trail out and around due to high centering after the UTVs come through.. I think they are all 48" width from what I've seen on the Steese. Seem to make/run in the same width ruts anyway.

Haven't used them on the Taylor, just seen their use a few years back. Well, about 15, I guess.
