There is one school of thought holding that the rear sight serves only as a window through which to view and focus on the front sight with the target slightly out of focus in the background. In keeping with that, there should be no distractions on the rear sight, only a sharp, deep notch:
After enough presentation repetitions, muscle memory will provide for sufficient alignment so that, in haste or in poor light, the shooter need only index the front sight dot with the target.
