Yep - our cabin in Stowe is on a well. I’m not a fan but no city water is available. Not a fan of sulfer or iron.

Yes. For 30 years. Knock on wood I am still on my original pump.

It is best to have your water tested for hardness, minerals, etc. That will determine the type of softening system is best and how to set it up for regeneration. There are many setups and it makes sense to understand which one is best in your situation.

I probably need a water softener. But don't have one. The water comes out of the tap at 8.5 pH. I fail to remember gr hardness. I last checked it a year ago. Yep, still hard.

I have a 35 gal/day RO system for when I want softer water in the aquarium.

We didn't 'drill' ours.
I hired Chuck Norris
He stood over 'the spot' and lightly spoke "hey water, get up here"

Then we added a softener.

Prefer man-made/added chems?

You can purchase all the water test kits you could dream of, quite inexpensively, from any aquarium supply website.

220’ is where my pump is. When the softener runs low on salt the mineral deposits show up in full force on shower door, dishes, dishwasher drying element. Extremely noticeable.

Drilled well at my rental units. Excellent water, no softener. In fact, for the first few months after we moved from there to here, we brought water from there to here for our coffee.

Iron, Manganese, etc. and a bit of sulfer in the water here, but drinkable. Water softener added several years after we moved. Stuff was getting an orange tinge. For a time during and after we moved back here permanently from 8 years in Kotzebue, we had a light sulfer smell, despite the softener. After a few weeks of regular use, it went away. At least we don't notice it anymore.

Both wells are about 110 feet, but over 5 miles apart. I have sediment filters on both. One well was drilled in 1981, the home one in 85- both have origingal pumps, changed heaters in both, once each, for sediment and other reasons - mostly to change to gas from elec and propane, respectively, as it becme available. I think the driller either did not install or mis-installed the sediment trap on the rental unit. When I need a new pump, that will get redone also. Hoping to die first..... smile

A friend lives at the base of a mountain in Hope, over AGL's way. He had money for 100 feet of drilling, hit it at 99 - a virtual river of el primo. Apparently hit a crack in the granite just right. The water comes up to within 25 feet of the surface. For several years, before he put a pump on it, and got their indoor plumbing in, he just dropped a bucket-device down the casing for their water.

His neighbor across the road and down a few yards went down to over 300 feet for silty water. Don't know if any water softener there.

Talk about hard water, a neighbor of my brother's in Twin Lakes CO has a deep well- IIRC abnout 300 feet. Excellent drinking water.

She doesn't mind the tiny gold flakes in it. smile

Whether you need a softener depends on what's down there. Some places, yes, others no. Here it's a yes unless you want to be replacing faucets, etc. every few years.

I'm on a shallow well. No water treatment needed at all. Great ice cold water straight from the ground.
