Dad was retired and bored, so he'd rewash ziploc bags and hang them upside down on the dish drainer (remember those pre-historic devices?).

Walnut polishing media for your brass is cheaper at the local pet store than Midway.

Alla that's just academic. Saving 4 cents nowadays is like taking a 2 lb fire extinguisher to a forest fire. Didn't used to cost so much to stay alive. We're so broke we can't afford to die. At this rate, I'm almost immortal.

Help a brother out. Got any money saving tips? Looking to buy a good used Tasco in the future. Someday.

My income stream is already passive. At least I'm not a shooting instructor though, so there's always hope.

Do they sell Tascos there? Which model would you recommend for an sporterized Enfield? It has a really nice paint job.

I have a buddy that reuses his styrofoam cup so he pays 30 cents less for a refilll instead of a new drink. There is scarcity mentality and abundance mentality. I like abundance and think scarcity can be a bad thing at times.

Fireball2;
Morning again sir, it's me again and I still hope you're well.

With a bit of background in that I've been married to a numbers person for more than 40 years - she's currently the CFO for a local family owned group of construction and development companies and in my working life I managed a few different businesses or was responsible for areas of a business where we had to run by the numbers.

Track everything and I do mean every single thing you receive funds in for and take funds out to pay for.

An Excel spreadsheet is best because it can be manipulated to give totals and different sheets linked, but paper is fine too.

We used to say if you can't measure it you cannot improve it.

Find out what you are spending your money on, where money is coming in from, study that and make the needed changes.

Please note it isn't always easy doing that. I shut down a business that I'd been working at for 27 years because we were no longer viable without changing the location and even in a smaller place with less monthly costs a viable model just wasn't going to happen, so there is that.

However, I worked with a buddy who was always short on funds but spent about $10CDN a day on Starbucks coffees. Somehow when I explained that was $3650 a year to him, he didn't want to believe it.

Again track everything so you know where you're at.

Pareto's Principal, the 80 - 20 rule, suggests most businesses will spend 80% of their money on 20% of their costs - so figure that out and manage the 20%.

For example the cabinet shop I managed spent most of the money on materials, then labor, then the monthly costs of lease and utilities.

We broke the materials down to raw lumber, sheet goods and finishing materials and managed that.

It does no good to count say screws if they're not in that top 20%. When they become part of that, then we'll manage them, but until that point they're not worth spending labor to attempt to manage.

We had one "efficiency expert" fruitcake come in who was counting the bathroom cleaning supplies... I explained Pareto's Principal to the owners and let them figure out what to do with the efficiency expert consultant.

They hired him full time, then in the fullness of time fired him and eventually as mentioned I closed the doors on the place, in part because the owners weren't able to make sense of numbers and do what was required.

Hope that made sense and was useful.

Dwayne

I went grouse hunting the other day and it cost $40 in gas. I borrowed a Ted Williams 12 gauge and some shells. How much does chicken cost now that eggs are $8?

This reminds of those math questions we used to get in grade school.

"Two trains are on the same track headed towards each other from opposite directions. One has a top speed of 57, but is equipped with a rev limiter that kicks in at 2300 rpms. Hill speed is reduced by 12% for every 1% of grade if the grade is less than 1/2 mile. More than 1/2 mile, deduct speed sequentially at a rate of 2 x pie.

The other train flat hauls ass.

It's 1:07 am on Tuesday morning, when will you run out of Doritos and need to make a trip to Lil' Pantry?"

Yeah, the bolt ons are too expensive. A lot of people use strap ons successfully. Are they less expensive?

If you honestly want to save money the only way is to allocate every dollar "BEFORE" it's made. I've saved 3-4 years before to buy just one gun.

Here is another fun fact to think about. It's a lot more fun to want something than to have it.
