What do people mean when they simply comment "tag" in someone's classified ad?

Sorry if that's a dumb question but I might just be a dumb guy...

It also 'bumps' a thread back up to the top if somebody has something that the 'tagger' thinks shoud be seen more.

You got that right.

or an even easier method to find a thread is to hit the FOLLOW button and then find it in that list under your profile. And it doesn't jam up people's threads. And some like to rack up their post count with 'tag'

In all the bars that I’ve been in, I thought it meant something totally different. My mistake

At the top of every thread is an icon to the right of Hop To. Click/tap on the icon. To find your followed list, as was mentioned click/tap your name in the top right of the screen. Followed Lists will be one of the options in the list.

If you've ever used the Full Editor and not unchecked the box to add the thread to your Follow List, you may have a bunch of threads you don't want on it, which you can remove by going to Edit Followed Threads.
