Used the .358 180 gr. flat point for years out of a 357 max. for deer.

The .224 46 gr. flat point at around 1700 fps from the 22 hornet smacks small game hard without tearing up meat.

The 135 gr. .357 Gold Dot with Power Pistol is very accurate in all my 38 Specials.

The 6.5 140 gr. Hot Core seems to work great on deer (only taken 1 so far) out of a Tikka Creedmoor.

Great bullets, good prices.

Think.

We never used them much for no other reason than they weren’t stocked. Mostly sierra’s were on shelves and they left a lot to be desired in the penetration department.

Noslers were for snobs. Hornandy interlocks for the win back in them days.

I just bought a 500 pack of TNT 125gr .308 for my Blackout. Haven't loaded or shot any yet, but soon.

Used that 125 TNT .308 for 200 off hand and rapid sitting out of a M1A and a match bolt gun with very good results. Decent accuracy with less recoil. The 500 pack was a bargain compared to Sierra match bullets back then.

Killed a few deer with 165's w/o issue. Still loading them for my brother in law for his 30 06.

The 200 gr .338 bullets bought to fireform for the .338-06 AI shoot little bitty groups, kill deer dead...105 gr. .243 have accounted for a boxcar load of whitetails for my Pop.

I’d wondered if Speer was still making bullets. Haven’t seen any .277 Gold Dots in quite a few years.

Most of Speer's bullets go to the ammunition lines. They've never advertised much because they could already sell more than they could make

HOLY GUACAMOLE!!!!

I worked in a sporting goods store in the late 70's!
In all the "crap" that lays around a gun store, I found a .25-20 Win round. To me, it resembled a miniature .30-30 round. I thought at that time, "I'd love to have a Ruger handgun customized to .25-20 Win!"
NEVER DID IT!!!

I'm absolutely blown away!

Too small for big game, too big for small game?

What caliber did you have re"chambered" and barrelled?
I'm ecstatic to hear that someone actually did it!
It may not be too late for me after all!
Again! Thanks for a most exciting and interesting post.

I picked up three boxes of 250 gr .358 this week. They had 8mm and .32 on the shelf also.

The bean counters keep ruining the product. They got rid of the dual hardness core in the Grand Slam making it just like any other CnC bullet, bought the rights to the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and let it rot. I bought 5 boxes of the only Speer bullets I liked, the 50gr TnT's. They shot like hot garbage. All they're good for is fire forming brass and breaking in barrels. My days of buying Speer bullets has run it's course.

The key to success with Speer bullets is like any other CnC bullet. Match the mass and speed of the bullet to the animal your are hunting. Speer makes a great bullet and I think by keeping bullets available through this mess they will be picking up more customers for the long term. Sierra, OTOH, will probably lose some to companies like Speer. I say that because I was a died in the wool Sierra guy, but now I’ll choose Speer if given a choice. More affordable, similar performance, and they kept making bullets for us!

My Favorite ones are the 270 90gr HP, I load 64gr of RL17 and get 4000 + fps out out of my 30" 11 twist barrel Savage 110. That round is good for everything from chipmunks to deer, coyotes are by far the best suited for this round. I have bought the 650ct value pack for as low as $99.00 not anymore but they were that price for a long time.

Right there.

Not agreeing, it's an example.

In the 80s bullet technology moved forward.
Sierra and Nosler were advancing their stuff.
Improving exterior and terminal performance.
Hornady drug ass, but saw the light and did the same.

Speer? They continued to make good, 1980 bullets.

Bullets that were more than adequate for almost everyone.

But others offered more.

If Ford never improved the 1980 F-150, it would withered and died by the early 2000s.
Folks claim to love old stuff.
But they buy heated leather seats, cruise, electric windows and locks, A/C,
remote start, cushy ride, more power and mpg, 4 doors.......

Bullets from all 4 in 1980 were good.
But if your competitors improve, you gotta keep up.
You can stagnate, and be the provider of value product.
But eventually your low price gives you the appearance of being low quality.

There is a big difference between the multitude of functionalities in a vehicle, and the one job of a hunting bullet. You are right that low prices can give the impression of low quality.

I have tried them a few times and giving another go because I can't find Sierras.

I have an easier time making Sierra's group.

Sticking with their hot core lines figuring a 90 grain is about perfect for my 6mm Rem. I am close to one load with Accurate 4350.

Still trying to get a load to work for the 140's in my slow twist 260. The Gamekings were easy.

I've always preferred Speer Bullets... Nothing fancy, an NO BullSchidtt. They work plenty well...
and pricing has always been pretty reasonable.

I buy a lot of Hornady, especially due to availability under DemocRATS.. but I do prefer Speer.

Sierra, I've given up on them a long time ago... they price themselves out of my market..
with their pricing, the must be smoking the same dope they've been smoking over in Bend at Nosler...

Used 120s in my 77V 25-06. Worked great on caribou. Also used (and still have) some 275 GS in .338, I think. A bit heavier than I prefer, but worked OK. (moose, 16 yards. - smile. )

I liked Remington for a long time. Could get them at Midway for cheap... $73 /1000 for .277 130 gr. around 1986. Then Hornady ever sinse. However, I have seen Speers for much cheaper . I saw a bunch of .277 150gr. The # 1604 was $22.99 and the #1605 150 gr. were only $19.99 plus tax . This was 2 yrs ago and thought that was very reasonable. ,I doubt I will ever use up 600 of them now that I use a .243Win. now days but for the price... The only time we shot anything with a Speer was a big doe in Wisconsin. My son used a .243Win. with a 100 gr. boat tail (#1220) . SHot it way forward and high . I was very surprised when it only went 40' . The bullet was found and was almost in 2 pieces but held up good enough.
