I told my grand girls I wanted to show their boyfriends my bayonet collection.

In high school, a friend of mine was dating a minister's daughter. He was invited to have Sunday dinner with them.

He got choked at the table while eating salad and blew a chunk of tomato out of his nose. It hit on the table and made a *PLAP* noise.

That's probably not what to do when meeting a girl's family.

Never had to. They always asked if that digger derrick truck was mine, I would say yeah. Invariably the young jar of hormones would remark that it was cool. I would ask if they knew what was the neatest thing about it, and when they didn’t, I would ask if they knew how many skinny teenage boys one could bury in a forty acre field if they stood them on their heads, because that auger was perfect tor the job. It was a lot of fun, mostly because they couldn’t convince themselves I was talking out my azz. I doubt I was. Fortunately none ever pushed me there. My girls were smarter than some, I guess.

As a kid, most parents liked me because I worked hard and treated them with a certain amount of respect. They shouldn’t have.

My daughter tells the story of her bringing home one of her young suitors after school one day. I'm in the shop with a piece of rebar in the vice, and bend it with a grunt (I'm 6'5", 245), just as they are walking in. The kid was very quiet and respectful....

I just look him in the eye and crush the sh.it out of his hand when I shook it. Let him know I wasn't scared and my intentions were purely sexual. You can threaten me, beat me, run me over - but I'm getting that 'giner.

In 1996 I did get invited to see one girl’s dad’s firearm collection in the basement as I was waiting for her to finish getting ready. Thought nothing of it at the time because I had clear conscience about the date (our 1st) and he was friendly but I suppose subliminally a message was being sent.

She told me on our date that he was part of the MI militia.

My high school girlfriends dad showed me his 357 the first time I picked up his daughter.

Fast forward year or so later, I picked up her up to go to see a movie at drive in, he told me to have good time at the finger bowl. That was little awkward, but I destroyed Becky that night.

Now with my daughter and her first serious BF, I showed him pics of my daughter how she skins deer and elk. Told him she can handle her self and a blade. and that I’d love To help her if something happens .

I got it all chipered. When my daughter has her first suitor come to pick her up, I'm going to toss him a .45 ACP round and say: have her home by 10:00 or the next one's comin' a lot faster.

I felt a little awkward the first time I met Her folks. A lot of Her brothers and sisters were still living at home and it was a pretty good size crowd. I looked her dad in the eye and shook his hand, matching his grip but not trying to win. The next day he ask her who was that young man. I liked his handshake. Oh yeah, we got married and still are, 47 years later.

When my daughter was 15 and gorgeous (head cheerleader in high school), my then-wife told me that all of our daughter’s male friends were scared of me.

She didn’t understand that was a good thing.

Before I met my girl's dad, she told me he was a retired pro boxer, and still in great shape - good enough so that when her 16 year old brother (strong, athletic, cocky) figured he'd show up the "old man" by asking for a boxing lesson and beating him to the punch, he got a lesson in humility.

The kid set up to nail his dad with a lightning-fast jab, but as his fist started to move, he felt 3 rather hard taps on his chest - before his arm was halfway extended. That lesson ended fast.

She also hinted very strongly that he was "connected".

It took me a second to register that, but only a second.

She was Italian.

Fortunately, "dad" liked me!
