Guy at work is gonna retire next month.
He went insurance shopping. $1800/month for a couple.
Then they looked into Obama Care.

The same plan we have at work, a bit over $300.
Cheaper than our company plan.
Despite him showing over $80k income for the year?

Anybody know if this is true?

He must be retiring before 65. Obama care subsidies expire once 65 and Medicare eligible as far as I know.

My opinion, if his info is true, is that income from retirement accounts and pensions are not treated the same as "earned" income.

Better look at the deductible and total out of pocket with that low premium. What we were seeing was $10K deductible and $20K out of pocket.

wages, union pension, SS(I think), a 401k loan that becomes a withdrawal at
retirement, wife's part time job...

Rock63 and LW,
It's supposedly the exact UPMC policy we have through work.
Is it?

If it is, at some point the company will drop our insurance.
I pay $100/wk for a family plan. And that's only 20% of the tab.

The company has a scheme we're they pay us to get insurance elsewhere.
$500/month for a fair.

Yes SS is federally taxable up to 100%. For couples filing jointly if the total AGI is 36000 = 25% taxable, 44000 = 100% taxable.

Their commercials for it say its heavily subsidized. They claim 4 out of 5 recipients pay less than 10 bucks a month. These are recent commercials.

Good luck finding someone that takes it, all the decent docs in my neck of the woods dont.

And supposedly the govt hasnt been paying their medical bills. Krogers stopped taking tricare, so has walgreens from what I understand. The govt wont pay them back for prescriptions.

This ^^

The way I understand it, if you have absolutely ZERO or near ZERO income you get the best insurance at the cheapest price and lowest deducible. (Quasi Medicaid) However; the more income and assets you have, the price of the insurance goes up an "affordable amount". But the deductibles go up on a very steep sliding scale. Yes, you have insurance, but the deductible is the buzz kill.

85% is the maximum percent of Social Security that can be taxed, no matter what your gross income is.

Anyone read the fine print on an obama care policy?

They might have a way to recoup the cost at the end from those with equity.
