I've got an early 1899A that has the serial stamped in the butt stock but nothing on the butt plate. The plate is definitely a 1899A plate and fits great. If it is a replacement it was done a long time ago.
I also have a 1899B that has two digits on the plate that don't match any sequence of the serial.
