I have a 1899A Take down in 38-55 cal. I have looked through all my books, and cannot find how many of these take down options were made.

Just wondering if that information was available. The serial number is 1223xx so made in 1912? I will see if my BW can send pictures.

Thanks for any help.

Nobody has firm numbers on how many were made. Couple folks have gathered information on guns by what they are chambered in, and could probably venture a guess as to how many were made...

But it'd just be a guess.

Darned few 38-55's made is the answer. grin

1899A w/26" barrel? Or 1899A SR with 22" barrel?

The three Winchester calibers 25-35/32-40/38-55 are challenging to acquire in takedown. A significant number out of the total production of these three calibers was before the takedown option was even available. We do not know total production of the calibers let alone model or takedown/solid frame. Maybe someday!
Many of them were also in the old time favorite octagon/half octagon which were not available in takedown.
My records to date indicate (88 A/ 31 A TD) rifles in 25-35/32-40/38-55 indicate about 24% of 1899 A rifles in these calibers are takedowns. I have 344 records of these calibers in total so 1899A = 26% & 1899 A TD = 9%.
The serial number of 1223XX is the highest 38-55 1899 A TD in my records. Would you be willing to message me the full number? I live in Canada and keep the actual data private.

Glad you like it! Carrying it thru gun stores and shows is what it was made for. I still carry it, can't remember everything that got put into the book with my memory!

Took me a very long time to find a reasonably priced 38-55, they are very popular. Got a takedown 1899A in 32-40, be nice to have a set of all 3 like that.

It would be an interesting exercise to go through a big dataset of 1899's from 1906 to 1921 by model and see how many of each were takedowns. I can answer a few off the top of my head...

1899B - 0%
1899C - 0%
1899D - 0%
1899F - 0%
MHG - 0%
1899H in 22HP (The Imp) - 100%
250-3000 - 100%
1899H in 1919/1920 - 100%

grin

So 1899A, 1899A SR, and non-22HP 1899H's (1906-1917). I wouldn't be surprised if BillR's numbers were close. 25% of 1899A and 1899A SR, and maybe 75% of 1899H's?

Well, I do know of two 1895's that lettered as made between 1906 and 1921, so I suppose that's a valid question...
