I followed the Scenar thread from a few years back and, convinced of it's effectiveness, bought some .308 155s. I'd like to buy more but apparently the "L" is all that's available now. Wondering if they're as effective on flesh and bone as the original.
Just curious if you fellas have done a close examination on the new L versus the old "basic" 155 Scenar? I read the same thing you said on the Lapua site. My eyes are telling me something different. I haven't yet shot the 155 Scenar Ls that I recently received, but there are some significant visual differences at the pointy end between these and the "regular" 155 Scenars I have used up to now. It appears the hole into the hollow point is smaller on the L, and also, the tip truncates down in a straight conical taper for about the last 1/8" or so going to a steeper pitch than the basic ogive itself. There are lots of "artist's conception" pictures of the L online, but I can't find a real picture showing what I'm seeing. The artist's versions don't show what I see. Also, I measure the L as being .012" longer. Need to compare BTO but haven't yet. Who else has examined both and noted the same? Here's a couple pictures of mine. The L is the one with the truncated nose as described.
Interested in comments from those who have shot and hunted both of the version to know if they saw a difference.
Cooperfan , I'm not Shaun, But I have been shooting them (the old style 155 Scenar) in my 20" Mauser M12 for a little bit. I know you're aware of the M12 Handloading Thread since you posted to it, but here's the link anyway. We start the Scenar discussion HERE on page 4. I may play some more with TAC, as it was giving Varget a good run for its money just before hunting season. Cheers, Rex P.S. I also look forward to Shaun's recipe!

Thanks, Rex
Looks like the “L”s are pointed, which helps with consistency. The 0.012” difference could just be lot-to-lot variation.
Please post your recipe. I want to start loading for mine, if this weather ever warms up
Yes I am. Unfortunately I don't have a recipe, not set up for reloading at the moment. All my equipment was sold to pay medical bills back in 2015 when Victoria got cancer. I was actually looking for deals on presses and such a couple of years ago when powder and primers became unobtainium. I bought 200 rounds of loaded ammo in Lapua brass from Creedmoor Sports when they had it in stock and the rifle likes it. I just bought more Lapua ammo with the 155 gr Scenar-L. Watching the primer and powder keg situation to see what happens next.
When and if I get set up again, I'll have plenty of quality brass. I also snagged a few hundred rounds of Norma ammo for $1 per round a few months back. More good brass. Maybe I'll go ahead and pick up the equipment and plan on selling a kidney to get primers and Varget, which was my go-to.
Used 150gr Ls in a 7mm-08 this year. Shot 5 deer from 80yds to 364yds. Exact same results on all 5. Pinhole in, clean. round golf ball sized exit on the other side . Mush in between. 3 never took a step, two ran about 30 yards. I was impressed.
Oh, and believe it or not, deer bite. Fairly hard.

Very nice. What is your load and velocity, if you don't mind sharing it.

I am bringing this old thread back. Did anyone use the .308 155 Scenar-Ls on game this season. I am curious to see if anything changed with the L version compared to the original other than the B.C.?

My buddy killed his Desert Bighorn with the 155L in his 30-06. Posted it last December in the Deceased via Scenar thread. Not aware of any other specific 155L kills but they gotta be out there.
