Just fired my brand new Pietta Chronos autoloader in .308. Ammo was factory Imperial 150 or 180gr probably made in the 70’s or 80’s. All the necks/shoulders showed cracks(7rds). Never seen this in my 35 years of reloading etc… Any thoughts on what’s going on? I’ve yet to check headspace with my nogo gauge. TIA
Try some fresh loads. Bet you won't see any issue.
Do let us know. I had one or two boxes of Imperial 30-06 from back in the 80s and as I recall the brass wasn’t of very good quality. I pitched it after 1 or 2 reloads. Heck, the ammunition could have been from the 70s. I bought it at a gun show.

I had issues with some 35+ year old loads. Don't know if that brass hardens plus a cold weld or what.
Only other issue was some fine Hornady factory loads 25 years ago. Split on initial firing.
The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!
Tried my nogo gauge. Bolt doesn’t rotate quite as much as on an empty chamber so looks like headspace is ok. I got a great deal on lots of this older Imperial ammo so I shall slowly use it up as required…no need to reload with the amount of ammo I’ve got…
Gunsmith I know has guys bring in older Remington 742s every now and then, complaining of split necks. Almost every time a switch of factory ammunition solves the problem
