If you read the instructions for Dyna-Tech Bore Coat, the method for prepping a barrel is about as good as it gets: wrap a patch around a bronze brush, coat it with JB Bore Compound (I use Flitz) and give it 100 turns up and back, changing patches and refreshing the goo several times.

How many on this thread recommending one product or another has a bore scope? I have a Teslong and that’s how I figured out the Free All was doing a better job than the Sea Foam. It’s also a curse as well, as I found out I don’t clean as well as I thought I did.

I've got a Teslong. Honorable #2 son, Moose, brought me a basket case CVA .50 cal muzzleloader he'd picked up somewhere and couldn't get it to fire worth a poop. I threw the Teslong down it and discovered an incredible build up of crud. He'd already cleaned the hell out of it, but we went down to the Shamanic Secret Underground Reloading Facility (SSURF) and gave it the Bore Coat pre-treat-treatment. It cleaned it up better than new.

I decided to give SeaFoam a try. I had previously purchased some rubber vial stoppers in various sizes a few years back so that I could use them to plug the chamber and fill up a bore with solvent to allow it to soak. I figured it was past time I finally put them to use.
I plugged the chamber of a rifle with hard baked-on carbon in the first 7" or so of the throat/barrel and filled up the barrel with SeaFoam. I let it sit for 90 minutes then drained the barrel and patched it until the patches came out "clean". The first patches were darkish gray and certainly had some carbon on them. After re-checking with the borescope, it does appear as if the SeaFoam made a slight difference, but not a significant one. I had hoped that the SeaFoam would help soften the baked on carbon so as much elbow grease wouldn't be needed. No suck luck.
At least, a 90 minute soak didn't do it. I don't know if adding more time would make a difference, but I'm thinking it probably wouldn't affect things greatly.

CRC GDI cleaner is the best carbon remover I've found.
Seafoam is snakeoil and doesn't work for anything..

Very little will stand up to that treatment. Including th top of the lands. There is a good example on the web by Bartlein Barrels, including photos of the ruined barrel, about this very thing. Do not do this.
