I’ve decided to sell this Remington 788 in .308. It comes with 2 magazines, 1 is the original .308 mag and the other is a factory 788 magazine marked .243 (same mag as the 308). It has a Gloss Leupold 3-9x40 Vari-X-II in Redfield rings and a Leupold 1 piece base.

I bought this rifle (used) roughly 15 years ago to compliment my 788 in 30-30 which was my first centerfire rifle bought by my grandpa and chosen by me from the gun rack in Diamond Jim’s Gunshop Apache Junction Arizona. In the 15+ years that I’ve owned it I took it out to shoot it exactly once. I was taking a friends dad, for his 85th birthday, to the rifle range and decided to grab the 788 for fun. I didn’t know if it was sighted in but figured I’d find out soon enough. At the 200 yard 6” steel hanging I had no trouble banging steel every shot at 200. My buddy’s dad had a big smile every time he heard the steel ring. All that to say I have NOT shot it for groups and have not worked up a load. It’s been shot maybe 20 rounds since I’ve had it and all those were that day at the range.

It has typical dings and handling marks but it has not been abused. The forward sling stud was likely installed by bubba because it has the familiar minor chipping from installing the stud without pre-drilling or tape meant to prevent it from splitting. I took a picture of the forward stud and it’s rather superficial and doesn’t go deep.

The bore is clean and bright with strong rifling.

Rifle, Gloss 3-9 Leupold scope, rings and bases with 2 magazines…..$750 plus shipping from ME to your FFL.

Thank you Sir.

I should add that the rear site was removed and the holes have screw plugs in place. I don’t have (never had) the rear site to this rifle.

Every 788 I've had has been a great shooter. Solid and dependable. I still have the .222 ,restocked with CA Claro. Gave my son the .243 for graduation. Sure wish they still built them. GLWYS

Any chance you want to sell the 30-30?

Anyhow that 308 looks good. I doubt that will be for sale long. Decent price for a rifle many people want.

I prefer classic.

No that 30-30 holds its own corner of my heart. Growing up I had wonderful parents and siblings but none were interested in fishing, hunting or boating. My maternal grandparents lived right next door and grandpa was the best friend this little boy could’ve had. My memories of my childhood are of nothing but happiness and carefree innocence which is what that old rifle represents to me.

As a kid of 12 or 13 I’d take that rifle and a box of 30-30 accelerators and a box of 150’s and wander the desert around the base of the Superstitions from sunup to sundown. I’ve shot so many jackrabbits and cottontails with her as well as head shooting quail. That 30-30 and me became one and I was an instinctive shot with that rifle and open sites. I was about 14 when grandpa took me to Jafco (a local hardware type store) and he bought me a Bushnell Sportview scope (made in Japan) and Weaver bases and rings. The scope still rides atop the rifle and still puts them into ragged holes.

That rifle is the 1 thing that I hope will always stay in our family….unless someone offers me 7 figures for it. 😂😂

Thanks for the nice comments guys!

My 30-30 and the last box of shells grandpa bought me almost 40 years ago. There’s only 1 PMC factory cartridge left…

What's not to like here. Great gun and excellent presentation.
My 30 30 and 7 08 mirrors your experience.

Looks like the standard length to me. Carbine 788s always look stubby to me. Your handle would indicate an interest in 788s. smile

The 788 in 308 is the rifle length….not a carbine. 👍🏼

The barrel measures 21”.

Thanks

Excellent story about your 30-30. I have the same fond memories of one of my rifles.

788's are excellent shooters. Good luck with the sale!
