I'm considering one in 243 and one in 300 Win Mag. Are these decent shooting rifles, and do they work...any known problems?

I have one in 270 Win. For an inexpensive rifle, I'd say they are acceptable, a good value, and reasonable accurate (3 shots in 3/4" w/ Barnes 129 LRX handloads w/RS Hunter). Trigger breaks cleanly and is adjustable but I left it as it came. Has a solid, sturdy, detachable magazine. Has the excellent Microcell recoil pad, too. One issue though is the rear action screw. The head of rear action bolt is supported only on the flange of the plastic trigger guard. The plastic stock does have aluminum pillars. The owners manual does say to only torque the rear bolt to 20-25 in/lb due to the rear bolt flange resting only on the plastic trigger guard, not the aluminum pillar. But use 30-35 in/lb for the front bolt whose flange does rest on the aluminum pillar. Don't crush the trigger guard by over torquing the rear screw. I learned that the hard way...-Mark & Belle

Good all around guns. Not pretty, but IMHO as good as most budget guns being made today.

Treat the bolt handle gently! Saw a guy at the range smack one and it popped off. Had a really strange appearance, almost didn't look like metal.

783's are machined very, very true, with a very quick lock time. They have a Steel magazine. These 783's are actually a much better action than a Rem 788, which also had a very quick lock time. Timing on the bolt for positive extraction is great.
You are certainly not going to get any admiration for running a Rem 783, but with a custom barrel, they are incredible shooters.
Upgrade trigger is available, Boyd's laminate stocks, and barrels available through the mail without mailing off your action.
Joe, there area a lot of actions that have bolt handles that pop off when smacked hard, including most custom actions.

Thanks guys. I sold my Tikka LSA-55 243 and have dies and brass and booolets, but no rifle. I need a truck-gun 243, and these looked like a good choice for that.
I appreciate the advice re: screw torque.

Pretty sure it's a Marlin X7 with a different stock.. I remember when the X7 was introduced, it had a good reputation for accuracy.

You can use savage pre fits but the bolt recess is about 15 thou deeper. Solution, just take 15 thought off the shank end. My gunsmith was already going to thread the barrel and taking a big off the shank was like 30 bucks extra.

Nephew has one in 6.5 creedmoor. Nice shooting rifle Moa with hornady super performance factory loads. That's all we tried out of it and it shoots them between 3/4 and 1" groups. This is one was built before Remington whent down. The newer ones I seen look and feel the same but with a price increase.
