Thinking of having an old 700 rebarreled to this cartridge. I'd like to shoot 160 to 170 grain bullets. 8 twist Bartlein. Does anyone shoot this cartridge or should I stick with the .280 Rem.?

I'd stick with the .280. Why deal with expensive and hard to obtain brass along with the rebated rim of the .284 Win. when you can obtain similar ballistics with the .280? Of course, if you just want something different then go with the .284,

10, One of my good pals has a .284 and just loves it. Killed a nice bull with it last season. He is a 7mm man. Has a 280, 280ai, 7mmRM, 7mmWM lplus .30 cal. and 340. So it's not his first rifle to use.

I built one one. I could give you all the bullshit of short action yada yada ad nausium. I wanted it for something different so I did it. At my age and how much I actually shoot it and can hunt, I have a lifetime of brass. I also have a .35-284 which actually came first when I was much younger so hence the supply of brass. Not better than a 280, I got rid of mine, and kept the .284.

I have the 06 and 270, shot a 6.5-06 for a while and liked it. Was gonna go 6.5x284, but looking in the 7mm line. Don't need a magnum. Deer and antelope only. But like the wind bucking ability of the heavy sevens. Will say this, I haven't found any 284 win brass yet. Guess I could neck up 6.5x284.

Lapua will occasionally have 284 brass available. I bought 200 rounds a couple of months ago. And usually you can find quality 6.5x284 brass fairly often. 7-08 is a good choice too, but if you want the 284 go for it.

I am taking a Win Mod 100 in 284 Win to gun show this weekend. Selling for my nephew. Depending on how/what sells may have a set of Redding 284 Win dies and a couple bags of new Win brass to sell. Tim

I like the idea of a 284 on a long action 700. I went 6.5-06 to 6.5-284 on the last rebarrel. No feeding issues at all with it. I'd expect the same for the 284. Since you're going 8 twist, I'd look at the 180 scenar and eld also.
All that said, I think Shaen(shooter71) on here has a good 280 remington reamer on hand and ready to go.

That's another thing. I need a 284 reamer. I may have to order one and I might just throat it for a specific bullet. The smith that built my 6.5-06 moved away and the new smith doesn't have the reamer.

Until Lapua stopped making it .284 brass was easier to find then 280. They just quit it last year as I recall. I haven't seen any 280 lately.

I don't think a 284 would outrun a 280 but I'm actually also considering just shooting 140s and 150s. I bet I can get a 140 to bust 3k fps with a 284. I know a 280 will do that in its sleep. But then again if I'm gonna run a 140 a 6.5x284 would work too.

I think a 140 at 3K is easy stuff with a 284.
Still hard to whoop a 280 if it has the length to do everything you want with longer bullets.

I know a 280 ai will hammer. But I guess I want something different. If I'm gonna build a gun I want a cartridge that's not offered in a production gun.

I shoot a Ruger 77 re-barreled in 284 Win and a 1950s era FN/Browning in 6.5x284. No plans on getting rid of either one.

You didn’t state whether your action is long or short. I am assuming long.
Have used one 284 and at least 3 280’s. I think the 280 set up with a throat for modern bullets is the very best cartridge for most BG hunting. The 700 LA is ideal. The 284 is good but it will never be the best in class.
If 280 ammo was widely available then I wouldn’t want any other cartridge in its class. It isn’t so I use a 270. Your rifle must go BANG so you need ammo.
Get a 375 if you want or need more.

I think I've been talked into a 280. Especially when I walked into our local shop and they have 20 boxes if 140 core lokts sitting on the shelf for 29.99. I mean a 140 at 3100 isn't nothing to sneeze at. Plus I can neck 06 down if I get desperate.

The 280 Remington shoulder is 0.050" farther forward than either the 270 win or 30-06. This is a safety feature to keep a 280 Rem from getting crammed in a 270 chamber
