For small parts you can submerge part into Vinegar.

Vinegar mixed with a little salt, proportions imprecise, will remove rust or convert it to a very nice gray-blue patina in a few days. Great for ruined tools. It's similar to blueing. Works on clean steel too. Oxide finish or some such? Pretty. I use it on knives now.

Something with oxalic acid as the active ingredient.

I used some Ospho today on one of those little carts you pull with a lawnmower.

Someone gave me about 3/4's of a gallon jug of it years ago. A little goes a long way. Don't know if its the best but it works.

Rust is a chemical reaction. Remove the activators then stop it from happening again. It's no different than putting out or stopping a fire.

I used OSPHO on my sailboat. Probably not as useful as other newer types.

Neutralize the battery acid residue first, a different potion maybe? Then approach the rust.

Used several brands offshore on a drilling rig.

Steel seal.
End Rust
Ospho

Did it help?

Sure helped the salesman.

A good industrial 2 part paint is the ticket.

Same as Ospho.

Both are phosphoric acid.
