Never mind I found an recent discussion on this topic with the information I was looking for.


I have decided get a set of optimum in-the-ear style hearing protection with noise cancellation and hearing enhancement. I want to use them for hunting, especially predator calling where it can be cold and windy. My primary priority will having a set that doesn't amplify wind noise and drive me crazier than I am. I live in Wyoming.

The products on Amazon have very mixed reviews and one set I had considered had this written about it "The ambient sound mics face the outside of the buds of the isotunes so they pick up a lot of wind noise, easily." A definite no-go.

This is one of the few times in my life where I will say price is no object as you can't buy back your hearing ability, they don't make suppressors for shotguns, and I am not looking to put suppressors on my handguns or old rifles so buying the best I can makes sense. Anybody have a some recommendations?

I use a set of muffs marked Pro-300. Work quite well and are large enough to keep my ears warm. I never noticed wind noise but I honestly just never paid all that much attention. I use then when I do an elk hunt and there just hasn't been a lot of wind during my hunts. That could also change on the next hunt. If so, I'd just turn the sound down to attenuate the noise as much as possible. I doubt any of those hearing
protecters do much for stopping wind noise.

I will second ProEars

The sound is perfect, hard to lose them compared to ear buds

They seem to handle wind pretty well

We have pro ear gold and pro ear slim at my house

We have tried other cheaper brands, these are Worth the money, my oldest set is 15yo and runs fine, parts are available relatively cheap if you need them

I think they sell passive ear muffs for $30 or something if you want to try the fit

I use ProEars, the same ear muffs I use for Sporting Clays. My hearing has deteriorated with age and the ProEars actually improve my hearing, at least in one ear.

I have a pair of Tetras and they are great. They can program certain noises to amplify (turkey calls, elk bugles) and others to block out (wind, footfalls). Company is run by audiologists who are also hunters.
