I was really disappointed to learn that they didn't actually swallow that thing.

Yup... I still have my 1967 Conn Director Trombone here in my music room. I ended up having to "double" on 3rd Trombone back in HS in the 70's when I got braces and could no longer play Trumpet/Cornet. (i.e. the mouthpiece was bigger and fit over the protruding braces - but just barely).

One of the many projects our students engaged was a volunteer program they designed and carried out - they provided musical instrument opportunities and experiences for disabled youngsters who might never be able to develop to the level enjoyed by others. You might have enjoyed contributing to that, eh? Maybe slumlord would have volunteered as well??

You have NO IDEA what I have volunteered for. I’ve put roofs on old peoples’ homes with World Changers and worked with Samaritan’s Purse many times, amongst ministering independently to folks in need for very simple things. Like replumbing a nasty crawlspace for a homebound couple, treating other poor folks homes for termites, building ramps for wheelchair folks too. I could go on. I could also pick up the phone and have 1/2 dozen friends here helping me fix something catastrophic if it happened. And it has before. It comes back, pay it forward, reap the rewards in heaven and on earth.

I didn’t teach retards to blow a horn in a comfy air conditioned building while sitting on my ass.you got me there

The "hot" instrument back when I went to school was the "trumpet" ... but when it came my turn to pick, the music teacher choose the trombone for me mad... But if the music teacher took the time to make that trombone really sing, I have have stayed with it... grin

It is helpful and good to read that you have done such things (right, no way one could have had such an idea). You seem right proud of that, and maybe a bit defensive. Kindly keep in mind that my report was what some HS kids did on their own - had little or nothing to do with me. And you remain consistent - can't even describe some kind things you have done without throwing in a snarky poorly-aimed dart. Carry on angry one - more snarks coming?

Understandable, and not well-handled for you. We always tried have the students begin with the instrument that was of most interest to them. This dramatically increased the likelihood of success and enjoyment in that early period where disciplined practice and discernible progress mean so much for the student. If his/her interests change or a different instrument seems more suitable in the long run, there are usually good ways to guide the transition.

My grandson (step-grandson just to be transparent) is 11 and just came from an after school experiment where kids tried all of the instruments and then were matched.

He got trombone.

We had an old one in the garage that he has been playing on. Now he wants a new one. I told him whichever he does first ten days in a row...we'll get new for him: brush his teeth, change his underwear, or practice trombone. Right now, apparently he's on the underwear fast track after having failed the brush teeth and practice trombone daily....not necessarily together.

As for the tryouts...they are kind of rigged. In that, if the band has too many saxophones for example...they out really stiff reeds on them etc. I thought that was really lame if it's true...seems to be so locally.

By the way, the girl on keyboards is angelic and doing some good works for society imo.

YMMV

Your idea with the new trombone incentive seems quite good - let's hope his interest goes up and he gets to enjoy making good music.

As for rigged tryouts to push students toward/away from certain instruments - that is lame stuff. Antithetical to the best reason for the program - student learning/enjoyment. A supposed teacher who values desired instrumentation above the early success of young students is on the wrong track.
