I am told, and everything I have read says that the correct bayonet for an 1897 Winchester trench gun is the "M1917" Enfield bayonet. I understand that this is the correct one, my question is, is this the only one that will fit???? Is there another bayonet made that will hook up to this gun??? and/or, is there any other one that is so close it can be modified slightly to make it work and still look like the right one???? An M1917 looks very close to the ones used for several other weapons in that era, and I was just hopeful that someone out there knows the answers to these questions. Aren't the M1917 bayonets the same as the Pattern 14 and No.1MkIII Enfield bayonets? If so they'll work too, but ain't none of them exactly cheap and found everywhere anymore.

By all the information I have been able to attain so far I believe you are correct sir!!! I don't mind paying for one, I just need to know it is gonna work. Now, as you say, finding the damn thing is another matter....thank you for this info sir!!! M

I have emailed my uncle your question on this. He is a gun and bayonet/scabbard collector and extremely knowledgeable on bayonets and scabbards from the Civil war up. As a matter of fact he was just working on a WWl trench gun. I also asked if he has an extra as he has been starting to sell some of his extras.

I sold a Remington made one for $100 10 years ago. What do they go for now?

From what I have seen lately, anywhere from $300-$700 depending on condition and the correct sheath.....

Yes, the M1917 Enfield bayonet is the only bayonet that will fit the trench guns. They were all made by Remington and Winchester in 1917 and 1918 except for some made in the 60's for Vietnam use. They were made by General Cutlery and Canada Arsenal and have black plastic grips.

I don't have any to sell but they are available. A friend has a website called the Bayonet Connection with them for sale usually, or ebay.

Thanks to everyone who posted and read this thread!!! I have been able to positively answer my questions regarding these bayonets. The 1917 Enfield is the only one that will work for the trench guns, both the 1897 and the Model 12. I now have two 1917 Enfield bayonets {a WWI and a Vietnam era one} and also the 03 Springfield one. They are not interchangeable and cannot be altered to work. I will also add that if anyone is looking for one and not worried about original, the 1917 Enfield sold by Atlanta Cutlery is very nice, especially for the price and a copy.
