They were great rifles, pretty much an homily version of a 700.

I used a "deluxe" version that had checkering chambered in 270 for a long time in my youth. It shot really well and worked great

my 35 whelen is a rebored 721 30-06 in a 700 stock. My 22-250 AI started as a 722 in 300 Sav and is again in a 700 stock, both stock changes were for the higher (scope friendly) comb on the 700 style stocks.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

It's my understanding that the 300 H&Hs all came with recoil pads. Mine did.

IIRC replacing extractors can be problematic. I have a spare for mine but it seems the 30-06 extractors are N/A.

Yes: SuperCub you are right, the only ones to come with recoil pads were the 300 H&H and the 264 win Mag. That is what a letter from remington rep. back in the 90's tells me.

No he didn't. Harry Selby did. Ruark was a hunter and a writer. Not a PH

I have several 722s and 721s, some of them are “Bs” and all are really good shooters. The reason so many 721s have aftermarket recoil pads is the drop with the standard stocks and their light weight.

Most have the standard stock with a lot of drop and they’re relatively light, so the rifle comes up and pops the cheek pretty hard. That gives the impression that the rifle is a hard kicker. So….add a recoil pad. The 300 H&H came standard with a factory installed recoil pad. The 725 is relatively light, lighter than they look and kick pretty good, especially with the ‘06. Etc. You’ll see
lots of 725s with aftermarket recoil pads.

Some of the 722s have a higher comb. I’m not sure of the 721s. The 722s I have have high comb stocks and all of mine are stamped in the barrel channel “HC”.

Is the "B" for the checkered models?

Dang it! I think you're right. Earlier I mentioned Rober Ruark having one but it was Selby. There was an article about it that I think Joe Coogan published based off Selby's memories with it.
I think you're correct on both counts. I recall a piece years ago by (I think) Harry Selby for the American Riflemen that mentions both rifles, but can't seem to locate it.
Is this the article you are referring to?

I have had just about every 722 and 721's. I like the B Models for the looks. I could use a nice 721 in the .264 Caliber. I have seen several, but just a little too late on the nicer one.

I bought a 721 at a Gun Show 45 - 50 years ago. It was cheap. It looked like someone drug it behind their pick up. I refinished the stock re-barreled it with a 700 knock off barrel and put the barreled action in a Kevlar stock. The original 721 barrel looked like the owner only shot mercury primers and never cleaned the barrel. I never saw another barrel in that bad of shape as that 721 barrel. My daughter wanted a center fire, so I replaced the barrel again. The second barrel I put on it was a 6mm. She used it successfully on pronghorn hunts. She eventually gave it back to me. I put a knock off 30-06 700 barrel on it. It still is on the receiver. That became my favorite deer rifle for years. Then I put the barreled action in a walnut stock and had the barrel threaded. It’s wearing a banish 30 now. It’s in an ADL configuration.

I have several 722’s, I converted them all to 700 BDL configuration, - 222, 22-250AI & 6mm/244. The 22-250AI wears a 700 22-250 knock off barrel.

721’s and 722’s came with low comb stocks for iron sights, they were also available with high comb stocks. I assumed that was done at a certain date, but I read where a person who I think is an expert said that was just an option, IDK. That 6mm/244 is the most worn of the bunch but it still is quite accurate, accurate for long range PD’s on the prairie.

My cousin gave me a really nice 725 30-06 for a job I did for him. I sometimes wish I would have accepted it from him, but it was way too much for the small work I did.

I still have the stock and metal to change that 222 to 721 configuration.

Yeh, I like 721’s, 722’s and 725’s.

I prefer classic.

they are supposed to kick, I guess it depends on style of stock, weight ect and if you are sensitive to recoil

Low combs and scopes are a poor combination. I have the same issue with 77’s.

With upgraded wood. Some of them have a stamped “B” suffix to the model number on the receiver, some have an electro-penciled “B” and some aren’t specially marked.

All of my 722s have high comb stocks while my 721s, a 30/06 with a receiver sight, two 270s and a 300 H&H have stocks with low combs.

Do you believe that I still didn't get my rifle via UPS yet? We had an appointment for our pups to get groomed. Of course UPS showed up (had to have signature of receipt) & we weren't home. Note on door say's will attempt delivery next day. Guy shows up & he cant find the package calls next closest truck & connection is lost. He said maybe tomorrow.
