My local shop has a Savage 99 that I had never seen.
Octagon barrel, crescent butt plate, in 32-40 Win.with peep sight. Barrel.looked pretty long.
They thought I needed that one. Already have enough odd ball stuff.
Interesting though.

How much were they asking for it?

An 1899 in 32-40 is on my to-do list for this year.

Not really an oddball,a 1899B in a winchester caliber. The 32-40 is one of the more rare calibers tho. I been hunting for a saddle gun in 32-40 for some time.Don

28" and 30" barrels were available then. I would measure the barrel. If it's 26" then that's standard. Any 1899 in 32-40 is rare.

An A SR would be my favorite choice among the 32-40 offerings, but given the general rarity of the chambering and my budget I'll be pretty happy with any rifle I happen across in my price range.

🤣 I suppose that's true.

I just like how the SR handles compared to the longer barrels.

that would have come home with me without question, but price would depend on condition,

There are a lot of rifles out there above my pay grade, but if it had been something within my reach it would have for me, too.

My rifle goal for this year is to carry an 1899 in 32-40 with me during at least one day during deer season this fall.

Me too. A high condition anything in 32-40 is above what I like to spend on rifles. But it I found even a shooter that didn't break the bank it would be coming home with me.

Same, I'm not looking for, nor can I afford high condition. Just looking for a rat, because it's going to get shot and hunted.

I always try to buy a higher condition gun than I can afford, have yet to regret doing so.

I do sometimes and sometimes I don't. It depends. A high condition 32-40 seems to be very rare and I wouldn't want it bad enough to pay 3k or whatever it would cost. I could easily settle for a shooter grade because at the end of the day I'm more interested in reloading and shooting the cartridge.

Not me. I’d like to scare one of these up in 303 Savage to go with the Stevens 44 1/2 I’m building in the same caliber. Both will likely spend most of their time on the bench.

The barrel on my 250 is over 27." It is great shooting off the bench, but just awkward handling otherwise for me.

I do love the old 303. It is my favorite of the 3 cartridges I have 99s in.
