Makes it handy for all your accessories at dinner time. Have your sweet n Lo on there with catsup, your salt substitute, adolphs, huntz57, maybe some scuppernong jelly?
Was an old guy in our hometown who'd been an "Asian hand" all his adult life. He and his wife still ran a business in Taiwan, but the spent most of the spring, summer and fall months at home where they owned "the mansion on the hill." It was full of Asian artifacts. He loved to entertain, had epic dinner parties. He had this round table about 8 feet in diameter that everyone sat around. When you sat at the table, the 14 or 16 inches of tabletop around the outside was all that was stationary. The inside portion of the table was one big lazy susan. Dishes were placed on it and it could be easily spun around to pass the dishes. If you wanted something after everyone started eating, you just turned the lazy susan part until what you wanted came around. It was all beautifully finished in a red laquer. He told us that he knew a woman in Taipei who had a custom furniture factory. This table was commissioned by some filthy rich Arab oil sheik who was having a bunch of stuff done over there. It wasn't done in time to be put in the shipping container with the rest of his stuff when the ship sailed, so he said no big deal. She sold it to my friend at a very good price.
He was quite a guy. He and I were the only ones in town who'd ever spent extended periods of time in the far east, so we enjoyed each other's company. One night, when everyone was leaving, he told my wife and me to stick around a bit. He went upstairs and came back with a bottle of Scotch, a single-malt, of course. It was a 30 year old Macallan. He says, "Nobody else around here appreciates stuff like this." He said someone gave it to him in Singapore back in the '60's. He'd never opened it. We proceeded to knock down about half the bottle. It was almost cherry red in color, incredibly complex and, if I may be forgiven a cliche, as smooth as water. there was no burn whatsoever. I never saw anything like it again until recently I saw some in a high end liquor store locally for over $5000 (yeah, three zeros) a bottle.
That's what I think of when lazy susan is mentioned.
