70 year old eyes being what they are, I am in need of better sight options than the standard irons on my S&W 625-8. I was wondering if anyone made a base for a red dot sight that replaces the rear sight and uses the same holes.
Thanks.

Yes they do make this, I just can't recall the website. I was looking for it and found it on the web, perhaps do a search.

EGW makes bases for several popular red dot sights. Costs about $50 and work very well.

Hate the look, but can't argue with the results. . Lots of "picatinny" options, in addition to those mentioned above, weaver has one - they do mount a bit high however. Pretty sure this is Weigand (short version) . . EGW (evolution guns works) - lots of options . . Several others mentioned above - . Raptor was a great option, but unfortunately no longer available - unless you can find a used one. Alchin mentioned/linked above is quite similar. . . .

They all look way high to me, like the see through mounts fudds use on their deer rifles back in Pennsylvania. Why not just make a mounting plate that puts the RDS directly on the top strap of the gun? This would be really easy to do with S&Ws since they come drilled and tapped already. There has to be a better way to do this, or maybe I'm overthinking it.

The Allchin is a mount that goes straight onto the top strap and allows the sight to be mounted directly to it. There is no need for a picatinny base in between.

You also need some metal for the sight screws to bite into before they hit the top strap.
Lots of good mounts for revolvers and semi-autos these days. I've used the Allchin and a few EGW mounts, both are solid and sit about as low as you're gonna get. With any of them a little loctite blue is recommended for anything that kicks more than a .22, and it doesn't hurt on the .22's.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

Thanks guys. They just seem higher on revolvers than the same sights mounted to my semi autos and those things are quite high enough for my tastes.
