It's nice to be able to do in a pinch but it's not something you'd want to do over hundreds of rounds. It's putting a lot of extra strain on the extractor using it to maintain headspace.
Falls into the category of can but probably shouldn't. While you could make that case, I highly doubt you'll ever wear an extractor out shooting .40 in a 10mm.

I think any “added stress” to the extractor would be insignificant.

I chronographed 1 round of 40 S&W 180 grain jacketed flat point and recorded 983.6 FPS That's about 20fps slower than what I see from an M&P40c ( I'm guessing Blazer brass). The extra room before hitting the rifling is lowering the pressure.

Have recently got a GP Match Champion. Will be putting a few 40s in moon clips for fun. Just because. Better buy some better clips than the ones that came with the gun. I have many very sturdy clips. Have heard of the probs.

Building up a ring of fouling inside the chamber is another concern. Swapping back to 10mm without properly cleaning could result in reliability issues.

Anyone know of an actual failure caused by shooting .40 S&W in the 10mm?

oh sorry you probably wanted the details. It was my fault. Bad reload. Cast lead, shaved lead on seating, stuck to case outside case mouth. On feeding, Glock 20 there was enough resistance, full lock up failed and blew the extractors and mag out. Use Lone Wolf stainless steel extractors on all my Glocks after that. I think Glock is using MIM after Gen 5 now.

Building up a ring of fouling inside the chamber is another concern. Swapping back to 10mm without properly cleaning could result in reliability issues. I think that a build up that could cause a problem would take a lot of shooting. And no worse than shooting .38's in a .357 mag or .22 shorts in a .22 lr chamber. You can do it a lot with a minimal amount of regular maintenance.
