Gents,

Not too long ago I inquired about what to use for new scales on a Fallkniven F1. I really enjoy this knife -- the VG-10 has held up to lots of use in camp and hunting. But there was simply no way around the fact that the Thermorun handle was hideous. So I cut it off, drilled a second pin hole with a carbide bit, shaped new scales from ebony, measured brass pins, then epoxied everything together. After 24 hours, I used a belt sander to get the pins flush and rid the scales of any excess epoxy. The edges were brought flush with the tang (oscillating spindle sander and then files) and then rounded off by hand with various files. Then it got hit with 400, 600, and 800 grit. Below is the "before" and then how things stand now... pre finish. I just need to decide what finish to use on the scales and then polish the exposed tang metal. (Fallkniven left the edges of the tang pretty rough, but they were never meant to be seen, so I guess I can't really blame them.) I'm leaning toward a few layers of Truoil and then maybe something more waterproof over top.

Nice! Ebony can be polished to a nice sheen without any finish.

Thanks, gents. I ended up going with two coats of Minwax wipe-on poly (clear satin) just for sale of water/blood resistance. Will get some pics up tonight when it's done drying.

Very nice work around the pins. Edges of the handle a bit too sharp for my tastes and I don't like the weird shape at the butt. Another way to do it would be to grind the tang until it could be incased inside the handle and use a colored liner between the scales.
